Сотрудники Университета Лидса в новом исследовании обнаружили, что в 2015-2016 году леса в Южной Америке поглощали меньше парникового газа, чем выделяли в атмосферу, так как деревья отмирали с более высокой скоростью, чем вырастали новые. Но почему леса начали активно терять биомассу?
Исследователи связывают этот процесс с Циклом Эль-Ниньо-Южного колебания, который оказывает глобальное климатическое воздействие на весь мир. В этот период времени в Южной Америке погода становится более сухой и теплой, в результате чего деревья начинают гибнуть, а также повышается риск лесных пожаров.

Исследователи изучили 123 участка южноамериканских лесов в этот период времени. Как выяснилось, на 119 участках в 2015-2016 году средняя температура повысилась более чем на 0,5 градусов. При этом на 99 участках была существенная нехватка воды. До приходи Эль-Нино эти леса поглощали порядка одной трети тонн углерода на гектар леса в год. В момент же Эль-Ниньо поглощение парникового газа сократилось до нуля.

В результате постоянного роста темперы на планете, приход Эль-Ниньо часто приводит к повышению температур до экстремальных значений. Нынешний год стал ярким тому подтверждением, так как были побиты сразу несколько температурных рекордов. В частности, была зафиксирована самая высокая дневная температура за несколько десятков тысячелетий, а также самая жаркая ночь.

Таким образом Эль-Ниньо дает уникальную возможность понять что будет происходить с планетой когда температура повысится еще больше, то есть когда она всегда будет такой, как в период этого климатического явления. В частности, исследование показало, что многие леса оказались крайне чувствительны к изменениям температуры и засухе. Насколько данная ситуация вообще опасна для планеты?
По словам специалистов, Тропические леса Амазонки играли ключевую роль в замедлении роста концентрации парникового газа в атмосфере. Если леса перестанут выполнять свою функцию, скорость потепления климата, возможно, возрастет. Однако не все леса оказались настолько чувствительными к изменению окружающих условий. Некоторые оказались очень стойкими, о чем сообщается в журнале Nature Climate Change.

Однако следует учитывать, что к подобному результату, то есть выбросам углерода, приводит не только изменение окружающей среды, но и вырубка лесов.
