В длину он может достигать 1-2 метров, но при этом очень тонкий, за что и получил такое название. Чаще всего червь имеет черный либо коричневый окрас.
Паразит обитает в пресных водоемах практически по всей планете. За свою жизнь откладывает более миллиона яиц, которыми и заражает организм хозяина. Считается, что он не представляет большой опасности для человека. Даже если личинка попадает внутрь, она не может жить в теплокровном организме.
Если в организм попадает уже взрослый волосатик, он также погибает в течение нескольких дней. Волосатик управляет поведением носителя при помощи генов
В результате ученые обнаружили, что когда хозяином манипулировали, экспрессия 4500 генов червя изменилась, то есть они работали не так, как до начала манипуляции. В то же время экспрессия генов самого богомола не изменилась. Отсюда можно сделать вывод, что паразит использует собственные гены для создания белков, которые влияют на поведение богомола.
Изучив гены, ученые обнаружили, что 1400 генов червя практически идентичны генам богомолов. Причем эти гены отсутствовали у других видов конского волоса, которые не используют богомолов в качестве носителя. Об этом сообщается в исследовании, опубликованном в журнале Current Biology.
Полученные результаты говорят о том, что черви приобрели часть генома богомолов путем горизонтального переноса генов. Горизонтальным переносом называется передача генетического материала, при котором организм получает набор генов, не являясь потомком донора. Долгое время считалось, что перенос генов возможен только между бактериями. Однако недавно выяснилось, что это происходит у диких растений, растительных паразитов. Кроме того, генами обмениваются даже лягушки и змеи через общих паразитов, а именно — пиявок.
