Нашим предкам, которые жили в каменном веке, приходилось нелегко. Их жизнь представляла собой постоянную борьбу за выживание и поиск еды в суровых климатических условиях. Среда, в которой они жили, была полна опасностей. Им угрожали свирепые хищники, отравление пищей или испорченной водой, и, как ни странно, поцелуи. К такому выводу пришли сотрудники Стокгольмского университета и Шведского музея естественной истории, которые изучили патогенные микроорганизмы, циркулировавшие среди людей в каменном веке на территории Скандинавии. Авторы исследования проанализировали микробиом почти 40 человек, которые относились к сообществам охотников-собирателей, а также земледельцам неолита (новый каменный век, который начался в седьмом тысячелетии до нашей эры и завершился в XVIII веке до нашей эры).
