Опасность зеленой краски
Недавно авторы проекта «Poisonous Book» изъяли из Французской национальной библиотеки две книги. Причиной стало то, что они были обернуты в обложку из ярко-зеленой ткани. По словам специалистов, очень высока вероятность, что ткань такого цвета выделяет в воздух очень ядовитое для человека вещество — мышьяк.
В 19 веке, когда печатные книги начали массово выпускаться, издатели начали отказываться от дорогих переплетов из кожи. Вместо них они использовали более дешевые переплеты из ткани. Чтобы книги не выглядели скучно, обложки красили в яркие цвета.

Особенной популярностью пользовалась ярко-зеленая краска, известная как «зеленый цвет Шееле». Этот оттенок был назван в честь химика Карла Вильгельма Шееле, который в 1775 году открыл, что смешивание меди и мышьяка в результате дает очень яркий и красивый зеленый пигмент. Изготовленная по этому рецепту краска была гораздо дешевле, чем остальные зеленые красители. Поэтому со временем ее начали применять даже для окрашивания одежды, свечей и комнатных обоев.
Как нетрудно догадаться, ядовитый мышьяк стал причиной проблем со здоровьем у тысяч людей. Появилось много новостей о том, что новорожденные дети травились от выделений зеленых мышьяковых свечей. Фабричные рабочие, которые окрашивали зеленой краской выпускаемые изделия, бились в конвульсиях. Также краской травились девушки, которые носили зеленые бальные платья. В 1862 году сатирический журнал «Punch» даже опубликовал карикатуру «Мышьяковый вальс», который высмеивал смертельно опасную моду.

Краски с ядовитыми веществами
Также авторы проекта охотятся за старинными книгами с красной обложкой. Иногда в них содержится красный краситель киноварь, который сделан из сульфида ртути.
