У гигантских варанов зубы из железа
Комодский варан, который еще известен как гигантский индонезийский варан, или комодский дракон, обитает на индонезийских островах, однако его родиной является Австралия. Ранее он был более распространен, и жил не только в Австралии, но и на острове Ява. Возраст самых древних останков этого животного составляет 3,8 миллиона лет. Конечно, динозавров эти вараны не застали, но все равно являются очень древним видом.
В своей экосистеме комодские драконы являются высшими хищниками. Они охотятся на самых разных животных, от мелких рептилий и птиц, до лошадей и даже азиатских буйволов. С другими наземными хищниками они не пересекаются. Главным оружием комодских варанов являются острые, мощные зубы. Как у многих плотоядных динозавров, они зазубренные и загнуты назад.

Когда варан нападает на свою жертву, он глубоко вонзает зубы ей в плоть, а затем делает рывок назад и при этом двигает мощной шеей. Таким образом рептилия наносит смертельные рваные раны. Казалось бы, с возрастом у этих животных зубы должны становиться более тупыми, однако этого не происходит — зубы варана всегда остаются острыми как бритва.
Сотрудникам Королевского колледжа Лондона удалось разгадать, в чем их секрет. Как выяснилось, режущие кромки и кончики зубов буквально покрыты железом, поэтому имеют оранжевый цвет.

Чтобы понять какой химический и структурный состав имеют зубы комодского дракона, ученые обратились в музеи, обладавшие останками этих животных. Среди них были зубы 15-летнего комодского варана, который жил в зоопарке в Лондоне.

Как показало исследование, в ходе которого ученые использовали передовые методы визуализации и химический анализ, железо на зубах комодских варанов сконцентрировано в тонком покрытии на зазубринах и кончиках зубов. Этот защитный металлический слой защищает зубчатые края и, как уже было сказано выше, позволяет им всегда оставаться острыми. Об этом исследователи сообщают в журнале Nature Ecology & Evolution.
Надо сказать, ранее ученым уже было известно, что у многих рептилий в зубах содержится определенное количество железа. Однако у других видов варанов и крокодилов его очень мало, поэтому оно даже не отражается на внешнем виде зубов.
Варанам достались зубы от динозавров?
Можно предположить, что железо накапливается в зубах варанов в следствие какого-то особенного питания. Однако исследования показали, что даже у маленьких варанов, чьи зубы еще скрыты в деснах, уже имеются характерные “металлические наконечники”. Это значит, что металлическое покрытие является эволюционной особенностью этих животных. Более того, ученые предполагают, что такие же металлические зубы когда-то имели плотоядные динозавры.

К сожалению, существующие на сегодняшний день технологии не позволяют понять, содержалось ли железо в зубах древних рептилий до того, как они окаменели. Химические изменения, которые происходят в результате окаменения, не позволяют железу сохраниться.
Однако ученые обнаружили, что у крупных плотоядных динозавров, таких как тираннозавры, отличалась структура эмали на режущих кромках зубов. То есть, если комодские вараны изменили химический состав зубов, то крупные рептилии изменили структуру зубной эмали, чтобы сохранять острую режущую кромку. У более мелких динозавров такая особенность не была обнаружена, поэтому, вполне возможно, что их зубы действительно были как у варанов.

Надо сказать, что у последних появление “металлических наконечников” на зубах было необходимостью. Дело в том, что зубная эмаль у этих животных сама по себе очень тонкая, поэтому ее нужно было укрепить. Соответственно, особи с железистыми добавками получили эволюционное преимущество. Кроме того, зубы с таким покрытием, скорее всего, более устойчивы к кислоте, что тоже важно, так как вараны постоянно отрыгивают шерсть, рога и прочие отходы, которые не могут переварить.

К сожалению, в настоящее время комодские вараны находятся под угрозой исчезновения.
