По данным научного издания IFL Science, самые долгоживущие жуки были найдены во время изучения коллекции насекомых Музея естественной истории Оксфордского университета. К сожалению, в современном мире и тем более в древности такого возраста удавалось достигнуть далеко не всем людям.
Насекомыми-долгожителями являются жемчужные жуки (Buprestis aurulenta). Большую часть своей жизни они пребывают в стадии личинки и прячутся внутри древесины. На протяжении десятилетий личинки питаются мертвой древесиной, и только потом превращаются во взрослых особей. Полноценные жуки очень красивые: у них зелено-желтая, блестящая поверхность тела.

Но людям, работающим с деревом, жемчужные жуки не нравятся. Дело в том, что они являются вредителями, которые медленно но верно разрушают структуру материала. Догадаться о том, что дерево заражено паразитами, очень сложно — на ней не бывает отверстий. Заподозрить об их наличии можно разве что по тихому хрусту где-то внутри древесины.
Особенно много проблем питающиеся древесиной насекомые доставляли во времена, когда люди активно пользовались водоплавающими кораблями из дерева. До 20 века из одной далекой страны в другую можно было попасть только на корабле, и даже одна зараженное паразитами дощечка могла стать причиной ужасной катастрофы с сотнями жертв. Так что репутация у жемчужных жуков очень плохая.

Паразиты уничтожающие деревья
Ученые считают, что жемчужные жуки пребывают в личиночной стадии по 50 лет потому, что они питаются мертвой древесиной. Она не особо питательна, поэтому для развития личинок и требуется так много времени. Но потом они превращаются во взрослых особей и выходят наружу, чтобы отложить личинки в другие деревья.
Обычно люди строят деревянные сооружения и на протяжении многих лет даже не подозревают, что с материал заражен. Об этом становится известно только после появления красивых но вредных жучков. Иногда древесина заражается после добавления к сооружениям новых пристроек. Или такое происходит, если человек ремонтирует постройку с использованием зараженной древесины.
