Как выглядит самая большая улитка в мире
Моллюсков можно назвать поистине удивительными существами, которые поражают не только способностью приспосабливаться к самым разным средам обитания, но и разнообразием. Когда-то у всех них был один общий предок — маленький плоский слизняк, покрытый шипастой броней.

Syrinx aruanus прежде всего удивляет своим поистине гигантским размером. Длина раковины может достигать 91 сантиметра, правда чаще всего размер составляет около 25-30 сантиметров. Масса раковины вместе с моллюском может достигать 18 кг. То есть улитка весит примерно столько же, сколько автомобильное колесо. Но это не единственная интересная особенность данного существа.

Если внимательно посмотреть на раковину австралийского трубача, можно заметить, что она имеет правильную геометрическую веретенообразную форму, а также довольно необычный светло-абрикосовый окрас. Со временем раковина может выцвести до светло-желтого цвета. Однако при жизни моллюска она коричневая или серая, так как покрыта периостракумом, то есть определенным наружным слоем.
Завитки раковины имеют ярко выраженное заострение, на котором присутствуют утолщения в виде узелков. У молодых особей раковина состоит из 5 витков, а у взрослых улиток она может вообще отсутствовать.

Как не сложно догадаться из названия, Syrinx aruanus обитает в Австралии, а именно — на севере континента в прибрежной области. Эта морская улитка, которая выбирает для жизни и охоты песчаные грунты в приливной зоне, а также в прибрежной зоне на глубине до 30 метров.

На дне океана улитка охотится на многощетинковых червей. К такому выводу ученые пришли на основе полевых наблюдений и анализы фекалий австралийского трубача. Впервые этих улиток, потребляющих свою добычу, заметили в 2000 году на илистых песчаных отмелях залива Уитнелл в Западной Австралии.
Как сообщают сами исследователи, вытаскивая улиток из осадка, они обнаружили, что у некоторых особей хоботки были вставлены в большие трубки, то есть внешние оболочки червей. Другие особи располагались над большими пустыми оболочками этих же червей. Максимальная длина оболочки червя, которую удалось обнаружить, составляла 57 сантиметров.
Очевидно, наличие длинного выдвижного хоботка необходимо улиткам для того, чтобы питаться червями, так как последние способны “отступать” внутрь своих оболочек. Некоторые из улиток, которых ученым удалось наблюдать в полевых условиях, имели узкие хоботки, выдвигающиеся как минимум на 25 сантиметров. Это позволяет им буквально “вытаскивать” червей из их оболочек.

К слову, существует брюхоногий моллюск, который еще больше, чем австралийский трубач — это слизень гигантский морской заяц. Он вырастает в длину до одного метра, но, как и у всех слизней, у него отсутствует раковина.
Почему улитку назвали “трубачами”
Пустые раковины улиток являются популярным предметом коллекционирования. Ранее местное население использовало раковины как сосуды для переноски воды. Но почему их назвали именно “трубачами”? Все дело в том, что если подуть в раковину, можно получить характерный звук трубы. Единственное, не стоит этого делать, пока улитка живая, так как подобные эксперименты могут плохо закончиться.
