Прежде всего отметим, что ученые разделяют щекотку на два типа — книсмесис и гаргалезис. Первый тип возникает в результате легкого прикосновения к коже, напоминающего ползущее по коже насекомое. При такой щекотке насекомое хочется смахнуть, а кожу почесать. Эту щекотку можно назвать легкой, которая не вызывает смеха.
Второй тип — гаргалезис, возникает при более сильном воздействии на определенные области тела человека. Именно эта щекотка вызывает смех, но она не всегда приятная. Все зависит от того, насколько интенсивная щекотка, как долго она продолжается, и кто именно щекочет. Иногда такая щекотка вызывает отрицательные эмоции, может быть неприятным и даже болезненным.
Согласно одной из гипотез, щекотка является защитной реакцией организма, которая досталась человеку от животных более низкого класса. Она позволяет быстро обнаружить насекомого на коже и сбросить его. То есть щекотка является своеобразным ответом организма на прикосновения к участкам с большим количеством нервных окончаний и сосудов. Это, фактически, пограничная реакцией на контактное воздействие, которое находится между лаской и болью.

Но также есть и другие теории. Например, в середине XIX века шотландский ученый Джеймс Симпсон утверждал, что повышенная чувствительность тела в определенных участках развивается до рождения ребенка. Это чувство помогает ему сохранять правильное положение в утробе матери.
В начале XX века американский зоолог Луис Робинсон предположил другую версию, согласно которой наиболее чувствительные к щекотке области находятся в участках, уязвимых в бою. Когда ребенка щекочут, он защищает эти места и таким образом приобретает боевой опыт, то есть учится защищать уязвимые участки тела.

Вполне возможно, что щекотка, именно та, которая вызывает смех, помогала нашим предкам и даже по сей день помогает нам налаживать коммуникацию. Дело в том, что друг друга щекочут не только люди, но и обезьяны. Шимпанзе щекочут шейку малышам, а они в ответ улыбаются и смеются. Молодые обезьяны, которым год, сами подставляют шею, чтобы их пощекотали. Причем просьба пощекотать — это один из самых первых сигналов коммуникации, который они осваивают.
