Древнеегипетские папирусы обычно ассоциируются с книгой мертвых, всевозможными заклинаниями и прочими текстами, связанными с египетской мифологией и верованиями. Однако они на самом деле часто содержат рукописи с совершенно иной тематикой. Например, науке известно много медицинских древнеегипетских текстов с описаниями болезней, их диагностикой, лечением и т.д. В ходе недавнего исследования ученые обнаружили еще более неожиданные древние письмена — подробное описание ядовитых змей. Проанализировав его, ученые пришли к выводу, что в стране фараонов несколько тысяч лет назад жило гораздо больше ядовитых змей, чем принято считать. Многие из них исчезли из-за изменения климата, так как Египет превратился в сухую пустыню.

В недавнем исследовании ученые проанализировали древнеегипетский документ, известный как Бруклинский папирус. Он был написан в период 660-330 годов до нашей эры, однако, по мнению ученых, является копией более древнего текста. В нем подробно описываются ядовитые змеи того времени, а также последствия их укусов и способы лечения.
Что интересно, каждая змея, по мнению древних египтян, была связана с определенным божеством, которое также описывается в документе. Иногда вмешательство этого божества, по мнению авторов документа, могло спасти пациента. В общей сложности текст папируса описывает 37 ядовитых змей, многие из которых уже не существуют. Возможно, какая-то часть из них вымерла, а другая просто мигрировала. Поэтому в настоящее время в Египте живет гораздо меньше ядовитых змей, чем раньше.

Почему в Древнем Египте жило много ядовитых змей
Бруклинский папирус содержит описания и других ядовитых змей, которые по сей день живут в Африке, но их нет в Египте. К ним, например, относится черная мамба и шумящая гадюка. Очевидно, в какой-то момент они мигрировали, как и бумсланг. Поэтому у исследователей возник вопрос — почему раньше в Египте жило гораздо больше опасных змей, чем сейчас?
В ходе исследования ученые сконцентрировали свое внимание на 10 видах змей, которые, согласно древним описаниям жили в Египте, но в настоящее время живут в африканских тропиках. Так как они подробно описаны в папирусе, у исследователей не возникло сомнений в том, что их правильно идентифицировали. Кроме того, они создали модель древнего климата. Это позволило оценить, подходил ли климат Древнего Египта для обитания в нем бумсланга и ряда других змей.

В результате ученые пришли к выводу, что в Египте несколько тысяч лет назад был гораздо более влажный климат, чем сейчас. Это позволяло исчезнувшим змеям жить в южной и юго-восточной части Египта. В настоящее время эта территория является севером Судана и побережьем Красного моря. Например, у побережья Красного моря, по мнению ученых, 4000 лет назад мог жить бумсланг.
Одна из змей описывается в папирусе как шипящая, “похожая на перепела”. Ученые предполагают, что речь о слоеной, или шипящей гадюке (Bitis arietans). В настоящее время змея обитает в Судане и на севере Эритреи. Как сообщается в исследовании, высушивание климата в Египте началось 4200 лет назад. Скорее всего, с тех пор змеи начали мигрировать в регионы с более благоприятным для них климатом.
