Около 17 миллионов лет назад на границе штатов Невада и Орегон, в 700 км от Йеллоустона, произошло мощное извержение вулкана Макдермитт. В настоящее время о нем напоминает лишь кальдера, которая, относится к Йеллоустонской цепи древних вулканов. Согласно недавнему исследованию, она может быть самым крупным на Земле месторождением лития. Содержание этого металла здесь в два раза больше, чем в любом самом богатом известном пласте. Правительство США планирует в ближайшее время начать его добычу, однако многие ученые обеспокоены таким решением, так как по их мнению этого делать нельзя.

Возросшая потребность в литии
Человечество уже многие годы стремится отказаться от ископаемого топлива и ищет способы как снизить его потребление. Но иногда решение одной проблемы приводит к порождению новой. Ярким тому примером служит растущая популярность электромобилей.
Электротранспорт на первый взгляд экологичен, так как не потребляет ископаемое топливо и не выбрасывает в атмосферу выхлопные газы. Однако с ростом его популярности резко увеличилась потребность в литие, который используется в аккумуляторах. Причем с каждым годом потребление этого металла растет. Это приводит к серьезному загрязнению окружающей среды, кроме того, в в процессе добычи сжигается немалое количество ископаемого топлива.
В 2021 году мировое потребление лития составляло 93 тысячи тонн в год. Для сравнения, в 2020 году этот показатель не превышал 70 тысяч тонн. По оценкам специалистов, к 2040 году потребления лития увеличится до 1 миллиона тонн в год. Правда, этого может не случиться, если человечество научится восстанавливать литий-ионные батареи.
Литий — легкий и мягкий металл серебристого цвета
В настоящее время основным поставщиком лития на мировом рынке является Чили, Аргентина, Австралия и Китай. Причем США в основном зависят в поставках от Китая. Поэтому местые горнодобывающие компании активно занялись поисками месторождений этого металла. В результате, как мы сказали выше, им удалось обнаружить крупнейшие на сегодняшний день его запасы.
Литий в кальдере древнего вулкана
Залежи лития были обнаружены у южного края кальдеры. Как сообщается в исследовании, почти вся кальдера Макдермитта содержит глину со смектитом магния, давно известным источником лития во всем мире. Однако у южного края кальдеры состав глины иной — он называется иллитом. В нем содержится гораздо больше лития, чем в смектите магния.
Как сообщают эксперты из горнодобывающей компании Lithium Nevada, а также Университета Орегона и новозеландского исследовательского института GNS Science, когда 17 миллионов лет назад происходило извержение вулкана, жидкая магма хлынула через трещины, в результате чего обогатила глинистую почву литием. Затем, когда древняя кальдера застыла, произошел новый выброс магмы с южной ее стороны.
Литий сконцентрирован в южной части кальдеры Макдермитта
В результате химической реакции, которая последовала вслед за выбросом, литий-смектит в глинистых отложениях был заменен литий-иллитовым глинистым слоем. Это произошло в районе перевала Такер. Согласно предварительным оценкам, здесь сконцентрировано около 40 метрических миллионов тонн этого металла, о чем сообщается в журнале Science Advances. По словам экспертов, добыча этого лития повлияет на мировые цены.
Почему ученые против добычи лития
Кальдера вулкана Макдермитт является священным местом и родиной для нескольких местных народов, которые здесь живут, охотятся и занимаются хозяйством. Кроме того, данная территория является ценным местом обитания многих диких животных, таких как вилорогие антилопы, шалфейные тетеревы и беркуты. Причем последние у местных племен считаются священными птицами.
Добыча лития может привести к экологической катастрофе
Кроме того, кальдера считается памятным местом. В 1865 году американские солдаты убили на здесь 31 члена племени пайуте. Но благодаря большому количеству пещер на перевале Такер, большинство людей племени Форт-Макдермитт смогли скрыться от нападения солдат. Как говорят сами представители этого племени, добыча лития для них равносильна осквернению Перл-Харбора или Арлингтонского национального кладбища.
