Условия на Марсе когда-то были похожи на земные — существовала атмосфера и присутствовала жидкая вода. Однако в какой-то момент Красная планета лишилась магнитного поля, а вслед за ним и атмосферы. Правда она исчезла не полностью — определенное количество газа у поверхности по-прежнему остается. Более того, в этой смеси даже присутствует кислород. Но можно ли его использовать для будущих миссий на Марс? Чтобы ответить на этот вопрос, ученые НАСА оснастили марсоход Perseverance специальным оборудованием (MOXIE), которое способно генерировать кислород из атмосферы Красной планеты, и испытали его в реальных условиях. В общей сложности было проведено 16 экспериментов по получению кислорода. Как сообщает НАСА, все они прошли успешно и даже превысили ожидания ученых в два раза.

Марсоход НАСА смог получить большое количество кислорода из атмосферы Марса
Марсоход Персеверанс успешно добыл кислород
Как сообщается в недавнем заявлении NASA, марсоход Perseverance за все время исследований добыл 122 грамма кислорода. Этого количества достаточно, чтобы небольшая собака могла жить в течение 10 часов. Производительность оборудования, установленного составила примерно 12 граммов кислорода в час. Для сравнения, взрослому человеку в сутки требуется 840 граммов. То есть добытого марсоходом кислорода хватило бы примерно на 3 с половиной часа. Чистота полученного газа составила 98% и даже выше.
Полученные результаты говорят о том, что на Марсе действительно можно генерировать кислород из атмосферы, чтобы обеспечить астронавтов, которые отправятся на Красную планету. Причем благодаря MOXIE они смогут не только дышать, но и заправлять ракеты.

Конечно, оборудования, которым оснащен марсоход, недостаточно, чтобы постоянно обеспечивать необходимым для жизни газом людей. Однако перед MOXIE и не стояло такой задачи. Во время будущих миссий астронавты будут использовать более производительное и совершенное оборудование.
Как работает аппарат для генерации кислорода на Марсе
Инструмент MOXIE был разработан инженерами Массачусетского технологического института (MIT). Его испытания начались с момента приземления Perseverance на Марс в 2021 году и периодически продолжались все это время до 7 августа 2023 года. В этот день устройство произвело кислород в последний 16-й раз, и на этом тестирование завершилось. Как сообщают сотрудники НАСА, во время последнего испытания устройство произвело 9,8 грамма кислорода.
За несколько лет пребывания марсохода на Марсе, MOXIE успешно справился со всеми поставленными перед ним задачами. Причем аппарат тестировался в разных условиях в течение всего марсианского года. Результаты говорят о том, что оборудование, размером с микроволновую печь, может постоянно обеспечивать астронавтов кислородом в необходимом количестве. Также ученые получили много другой полезной информации, которая позволит совершенствовать технологию.

Принцип работы устройства заключается в отделении одного атома кислорода от молекулы углекислого газа, который присутствует в атмосфере Красной планеты. Происходит это за счет электрохимического процесса. После получения кислорода, газ проходит через специальную систему, которая анализирует его чистоту и количество.
По словам исследователей, успешное испытание MOXIE в реальных условиях на шаг приблизило людей к тому моменту, когда первые астронавты будут жить на Марсе за счет достижений, сделанных на Земле. Но самое главное, что технология, как уже было сказано выше, позволит заправлять ракеты, чтобы люди смогли возвращаться на Землю. К слову, это было первое в истории испытание технологии, предназначенной непосредственно для будущей колонизации Марса.

Благодаря полученной во время испытаний информации, команда создаст устройство MOXIE 2.0, которое будет работать еще более эффективно. Это будет уже полномасштабная система, включающая в себя не только генератор кислорода, но и устройство сжижения и хранения полученного газа. Однако испытать его получится не скоро, так как в ближайшее время миссии на Марс не запланированы.
