Страх является нормальным и даже необходимым для выживания чувством, которое встроено в нашу ДНК. Однако нормальный здоровый страх у человека возникает в ответ на опасность. Если же он не имеет рационального объяснения — это уже фобия. Такие страхи часто мешают людям жить, поэтому нуждаются в лечении. Одним из наиболее эффективных способов лечения фобий, является так называемая экспозиционная терапия. Смысл ее заключается в том, что пациента заставляют сталкиваться лицом к лицу с источником страха, но при отсутствии прямой опасности, чтобы не усугубить фобию. Но контакт с источником страха происходит по нарастающей. То есть человеку не кладут паука на руку во время первого же сеанса, а вначале показывают его фотографии или даже просят представить его в своем воображении. Когда человек привыкает, и фотографии или просто образ перестают вызывать страх, переходят к следующему этапу, например, показывают видео, и т.д.

При этом психолог на каждом этапе не просто убеждает пациента в том, что страх необоснован, а пытается разобраться чем он вызван, то есть почему именно боится пациент, чтобы помочь ему преодолеть фобию. В результате шаг за шагом человек избавляется от своего страха.
Однако все фобии лечатся по отдельности. То есть, когда у человека возникает арахнофобия одновременно с боязнью с высоты, проводят сразу две экспозиционных терапии. Однако по мнению сотрудников Рурского университета, на самом деле достаточно одной терапии, так страхи не только приходят вместе, но и покидать человека могут одновременно.
Как страхи человека взаимосвязаны
Для своего исследования, ученые привлекли 50 добровольцев, у которых была арахнофобия и боязнь высоты. Однако они проводили с ними экспозиционную терапию только против арахнофобии. По мере лечения, исследователи периодически измеряли силу страха при помощи специально разработанных опросников.

Как сообщается в журнале Translational Psychiatry, экспозиционная терапия, как и ожидалось, показала высокую эффективность против арахнофобии, но вместе с ней отступал и страх высоты. Причем добровольцы не просто говорили, что меньше боятся высоты, но также демонстрировали это своим поведением. Исследователи обращали внимание на то, насколько близко участники осмелились приблизиться к паукам или как высоко они могли подняться на высокую церковную башню.
Почему страхи взаимосвязаны
По мнению авторов работы, сделанное ими открытие позволит переосмыслить терапевтические подходы и, возможно, поможет разработать более универсальные и эффективные методы лечения. Но для этого еще предстоит ответить на многие вопросы.
Пока неизвестно, как именно эффект от терапии переносится с одного страха на другой. Он не может быть полностью объяснен процессами ассоциативного обучения. Вполне возможно, что результат обусловлен повышением способности человека контролировать свои страхи. Также ученые допускают, что между боязнью пауков и боязнью высоты есть что-то общее, но неочевидное.

Разобраться в этом помогут дополнительные исследования. Например, необходимо выяснить между какими еще фобиями имеется взаимосвязь. Если экспозиционная терапия влияет абсолютно на все страхи, скорее всего причина заключается в улучшении способности людей совладать со страхом. Но, если связь есть только между отдельными фобиями, вполне возможно, что у них одна клиническая причина, которую необходимо выяснить.
