Какие средневековые профессии считались женскими
Исследование, о котором далее пойдет речь, провел доцент Кембриджского университета Филипп Картер. В своей работе он обратился к записям некого Ричарда Нэпьера, считающегося выдающимся английским практикующим врачом и астрологом. Он работал в 1597-1634 годы и документировал свой опыт, который насчитывает более 70 тысяч консультаций пациентов.
К Ричарду Нэпьеру обращались с самыми разными проблемами, которые иногда вовсе не касались здоровья пациента, а были связаны с подозрениями других людей в колдовстве. Пациенты часто жаловались, что их околдовал сосед или кто-либо еще, с кем они контактировали. У астролога и доктора они просили подтверждения или опровержения своих подозрений, а также защиты в виде всевозможных амулетов.

Как сообщается в исследовании, среди 802 пациентов Нэпьера, которые обращались по поводу колдовства, 130 рассказали подробности о профессии обвиняемого. Филипп Картер проанализировал эти данные и выявил отрасли, работники которых чаще всего обвинялись в связях с темными силами. К ним относится общественное питание, здравоохранение, уход за детьми, ведение домашнего хозяйства, животноводство и молочное производство.
Все эти профессии были исключительно женскими. Они давали женщинам определенную власть и уважение в обществе. Но вместе с тем на них ложилась большая ответственность. Ошибки и неудачи в этих отраслях моментально приводили к подозрениям в связях с потусторонними силами.
За что женщин обвиняли в колдовстве
Одной из самых опасных профессий было здравоохранение и акушерство. В своих записках Ричард Нэпьер описывает случай, произошедший в 1603 году, когда после родов у 24-летней девушки начался бред. Это сразу привело к подозрениям в колдовстве одной из акушерок. Если вспомнить уровень медицины в те времена, то становится неудивительным, что женщин постоянно казнили.

Не меньшему риску подвергались женщины, которые вели домашнее хозяйство, присматривали за детьми, готовили еду, лечили инвалидов и т.д. Часто они работали сразу в нескольких семьях, чтобы как-то свести концы с концами. Таким женщинам, чтобы быть обвиненными в колдовстве, достаточно было просто поприсутствовать при чужом несчастье. А если они оказывались втянутыми в чужие разногласия или недоразумения, вероятность быть обвиненной в колдовстве увеличивалась во много раз.
Если корова начинала давать горькое молоко, из которого получался невкусный сыр, в этом тоже винили потусторонние силы, а точнее — женщину-ведьму, которая по мнению людей того времени, была причиной всех неприятностей. Так как женщины часто совмещали несколько профессий, они всегда рисковали, о чем Филипп Картер сообщает в журнале Gender & History.

Работа Филиппа Картера дает еще одну убедительную причину, почему именно женщины играли главную роль в массовой истерии средневековых людей вокруг колдовства. Охота на ведьм привела к казням сотен женщин, которые, разумеется, не имели никакого отношения к занятиям темным искусством. Причем, во время “расследования” таких дел применялись пытки, в результате чего женщины сознавались в том, чего на самом деле не совершали.
Но нельзя сказать, что от охоты на ведьм пострадали только женщины. Согласно имеющейся статистике, процент мужчин составлял 18-20%. Что касается среднего возраста жертв, то он составлял около 60 лет.
