Как радиация изменила птиц в Чернобыльской зоне
Как поясняют сами исследователи, радиологическое загрязнение — это серьезный дополнительный стрессор, с которым организмам приходится справляться в течение всей жизни. Это приводит ко множеству последствия даже помимо каких-либо изменений в ДНК, однако эти последствия наукой по сей день плохо изучены. Например, лишь совсем недавно ученые узнали, что в Чернобыле живут настоящие волки-мутанты.
Впервые ученые узнали о том, что радиация также имеет серьезные последствия для птиц, в 2011 году. В ходе исследования авторы проанализировали 550 птиц из Чернобыльской зоны, которые принадлежали к 48 различным видам. Как выяснилось, даже относительно низкий уровень радиации привел к уменьшению размеров головы и мозга. То есть радиационное излучение по какой-то причине препятствовало их развитию.

Обнаруженные изменения были настолько сильными, что, скорее всего, отразились на умственных способностях пернатых. Правда, это только предположение ученых, так как определить когнитивные способности диких птиц и сравнить их с другими птицами не так просто.
Что произошло с синицами в зоне отчуждения
Чтобы еще больше узнать о последствиях радиации для птиц, на этот раз ученые разместили несколько скворечников в двух разных районах Чернобыльской зоны — один имел сильное радиационное загрязнение, а второй — относительно низкое. Пернатых обитателей этих скворечников сравнили друг с другом при помощи ряда тестов.
Первое, что бросилось в глаза исследователям — в сильно зараженных участках было гораздо меньше гнезд. Правда, пока неизвестно как и почему радиация отразилась на их популяциях. Никаких существенных различий в размножении или здоровье птенцов исследователи не обнаружили. Но зато они заметили, что птицы из загрязненный районов имели большее разнообразие насекомых в рационе. Учитывая это, гнезд здесь должно быть наоборот больше.

Кроме того, между птицами были обнаружены некоторые другие различия. Образцы ДНК птичьего помета показали совершенно разный состав кишечного микробиома, о чем авторы работы сообщили на ежегодной конференции Общества экспериментальной биологии в Праге. Правда, радиация не повлияла на разнообразие бактерий в кишечнике, а только изменила их пропорции.
Эти изменения могут показаться несущественными, однако следует учитывать, что состав кишечного микробиома — это один из ключевых факторов, определяющих здоровье. Поэтому данное открытие может дать дальнейшее представление о том, как радиационное заражение может влиять на здоровье птиц.
“Полученные результаты создают интересный фон для понимания экологии птиц в радиологически загрязненных районах. Они дают нам ценную новую информацию о влиянии радиации на молодых птиц — область исследований, которая до сих пор была не ясна” — говорит научный сотрудник Университета Ювяскюля, один из авторов исследования, Самели Пиирто.
По мнению ученых, исследование последствий радиоактивного заражения, дает понимание того, как человечество и природа в целом сможет перенести глобальное радиационное загрязнение, например, в случае ядерной войны.
