В тот день, когда археолог Говард Картер открыл гробницу, змея убила его канарейку, о чем в 1922 году сообщало издание New York Times. Египетские сотрудники сразу расценили это как недобрый знак и предупреждение о том, что дух покойного правителя против вторжения в его гробницу.
Но о проклятии Тутанхамона заговорили позже — когда скончался спонсор экспедиции, коллекционер египетских древностей Джордж Герберт, лорд Карнарвон, о чем мы рассказывали ранее. Археологов не убивал токсичный грибок
Самое распространенное объяснение загадочных смертей, связанных с гробницей Тутанхамона — наличие в ней токсичных грибков. Известно, что некоторые мумии содержат плесень Aspergillus niger и Aspergillus flavus, которая поражает легкие и вызывает кровотечения. Однако в последнее время ученые отвергают эту версию.
Сам Говард Картер говорил, что учитывая местные условия, лорд Карнарвон в большей безопасности находился внутри гробницы Тутанхамона, чем снаружи. Ученые же говорят, что в настоящее время неизвестны случаи, чтобы у кого-то из археологов или туристов возникли недуги из-за токсинов из гробниц.
К примеру, аспергиллез вызывает лишь кашель и одышку. Правда, последствия могут быть более серьезными для людей с ослабленным иммунитетом. Это может показаться странным, но самое приземленное и правдоподобное объяснение впервые прозвучало от Фрэнка МакКланахана, врача, который лечил лорда Карнарвона. По его словам, умерло лишь небольшое количество людей из тех, кто посещал гробницу. Археологи приезжали из всех концов света, чтобы ознакомиться с находкой.
Проще говоря, если взять большую толпу людей, то какой-то процент обязательно умрет в ближайшее время без каких-либо проклятий или токсичных грибков из гробницы. Другие объективные причины «проклятия Тутанхамона» вряд ли существуют. Правда, современные археологи все равно надевают перчатки, маски и даже одноразовую одежду, чтобы защитить себя от бактерий и плесени.
