Согласно исследованию британского геолога Герберта Генри Томаса, опубликованного в 1923 году, “голубые камни”, образующие внутренний круг, были добыты в холмах Пресели, которые находятся в западном Уэльсе. Теория не подвергалась сомнению последние 100 лет, однако в недавнем исследовании ученые обнаружили, что самый крупный из камней, известный как “Алтарный”, был доставлен из гораздо более отдаленных мест.

Внутренний круг Стоунхенджа образован «голубыми камнями”. Такое название они получили по той причине, что приобретают голубоватый оттенок, когда намокают. Кроме того, название дано, чтобы отличить их от “сарсеновых” камней, которые образуют внешний круг. Предположительно, «голубые камни» были добыты в карьере, расположенном на расстоянии 225 километров от Стоунхенджа.
Самый большой камень во внутреннем круге Стоунхенджа, который представляет собой серо-зеленую лежащую плиту длиной 4,9 метра, Герберт Генри Томас отнес к тому же типу, что и остальные “голубые камни”. То есть, по его мнению, все они произошли из одного и того же региона.

Теперь же сотрудники Университете Аберистуита в Уэльсе обнаружили, что теория была ошибочной. Происхождение некоторых камней из внутреннего круга британский геолог определил действительно точно, но не всех. По их мнению, “алтарный камень”, а также другие некоторые камни прибыли с севера Британии. Их добыли в каком-то неизвестном карьере.
К такому выводу ученые пришли после того как сравнили геохимию и минералогию «Алтарного» камня с 58 песчаниками, обнаруженными на разных участках от южного Уэльса до западной Англии. Однако никаких совпадений они не обнаружили. Это говорит о том, что команда искала место происхождения камня не в том регионе, где он был добыт.

Надо сказать, что камни именно внутреннего круга вызывают у ученых наибольший интерес. Стоунхендж, как известно, был построен примерно 4000-5000 лет назад. Однако с течением времени он многократно достраивался и перестраивался. Считается, что “голубые камни” были установлены на самых ранних этапах строительства, то есть представляют собой самую древнюю часть сооружения.

Когда археологи только начали исследовать древнюю конструкцию, они назвали камни “иностранными”. Для той местности, где находится сооружение, они действительно являются экзотическими. Как позже выяснилось, Стоунхендж является самым отдаленным доисторическим памятником от места добычи материала.
Алтарный же камень сильно выделяется на фоне остальных “голубых камней”. Он не только гораздо крупнее, но и выполнен из совсем другой породы. К сожалению, у исследователей нет геологических данных относительно времени, когда он прибыл в Стоунхендж. Вполне возможно, что он появился гораздо позже, чем «голубые камни».
Стоунхендж достраивался в течение длительного времени
Если ученые обнаружат точное место, где был добыт гигантский камень, возможно, это даст другие подсказки о строительстве древнего памятника. Однако оно пока не установлено. Исследователи обратили внимание на то, что камень содержит большое количество бария. Это может быть подсказкой для будущих поисков. Но уже сейчас есть предположение, что он прибыл из северной Англии или Шотландии. Об этом сообщается в исследовании, опубликованном в журнале Archaeological Science: Reports.
