Например, недавно ученые обнаружили новый вид вирусоподобных сущностей, которые населяют бактерии, обитающие во рту и кишечнике человека. Сотрудники Стэнфордского университета, которые и обнаружили их, назвали сущности “обелисками”. Они содержат геномы, которые состоят из петель РНК. Принадлежащие им последовательности исследователи обнаружили по всему миру.

Как мы знаем со школьной скамьи, РНК, или рибонуклеиновая кислота, является посредником при передаче информации между ДНК и рибосомами, которые синтезируют белки в клетках живых организмов. Сама информация, которую РНК переносит, закодирована в генах (определенных участках ДНК).
Однако огромное количество вирусов, например, SARS-CoV-2, не имеют ДНК. Их геномы состоят только из РНК. Они содержат последовательности, кодирующие белки, составляющие вирусную оболочку и рибозимы — ферменты, которые позволяют вирусу копировать свою исходную РНК, оказавшись внутри клетки. Ученые до сих пор не пришли к единому мнению относительно вирусов — можно ли их считать живыми. на этот счет существуют различные «за» и «против». Например, вирусы не могут размножаться вне клетки-хозяина, что отличает их от живых организмов. Но существуют еще более простые сущности, такие как вироиды, которые ученые обнаружили в еще в начале прошлого века. Они представляют собой петлю РНК, как у вирусов, но не имеют белковой оболочки.

Вирусы имеют белковую оболочку, в отличие от вироидов
Похоже, что геномы вироидов не способны кодировать белки. Ученые уже долгое время занимаются их изучением, так как вироиды существуют изолированно, а взаимодействуют с геномами растений. Причем последние от них часто страдают, например, у них возникает задержка роста. У картофеля из-за вироидов происходит деформация, также они вызывают проблемы у других сельскохозяйственных культур.
Изначально ученые предполагали, что вироиды распространены только среди растений. Однако в последнее время были обнаружены свидетельства того, что они встречаются в животном вире, а также в бактериях и других формах жизни.

В новом исследовании сотрудники из Стэнфорда разработали программное обеспечение для анализа существующих генов микробов, живущих в человеке. Задача состояла в том, чтобы найти последовательности РНК, которые образуют генетический материал вирусов либо вироидов.

«Обелиски» состоят из РНК, но не являются обычными вирусами
В результате ученые обнаружили около 30 тысяч петель РНК, которые являются “обелисками”. Исследователи уверены, что они не являются обычными вирусами, так как РНК-вирусы содержат намного больше оснований. В то же время РНК “обелисков” кодируют белки, участвующие в репликации РНК (копировании), поэтому они более сложные, чем обычные вироиды.
Но, как и вироиды, обелиски не кодируют белки, составляющие их оболочку. Чтобы определить насколько “обелиски” отличаются от вироидов, необходимы дополнительные исследования. Кроме того, пока непонятно, влияют ли они на здоровье человека.
Где обитают “обелиски” в человеке
Как сообщают исследователи, “обелиски” содержат 7% кишечных бактерий человека, а также половина бактерий во рту. Самое интересное что обелиски, обитающие в микробах, живущих в разных частях тела, имеют отличительные последовательности, о чем сообщает издание Scince.
