Почему стекло хрупкое
Чаще всего в технике применяются оксидные стекла — силикатные, кварцевые, германатные и пр. В частности, большой популярностью пользуются алюмосиликатные стекла, которые содержат кремний, алюминий, бор и кислород. При этом оксидные стекла, как и все остальные, имеют неупорядоченную внутреннюю структуру, с чем связана его хрупкость.
Напомним, что стекло не имеет кристаллической решетки, в отличие от обычных твердых материалов. Вместо этого оно аморфно, что делает его, фактически, жидкостью, только с очень высокой вязкостью. Например, как и все жидкости, стекла способны течь. Только делают они это делают очень медленно. Если вы возьмете старое стекло, которое много лет стояло в оконной раме, и измеряете его толщину, то обнаружите, что сверху оно более тонкое, чем снизу.

Оксидное стекло высокой прочности
Чтобы придать алюмосиликатному стеклу прочность, ученые изменили его структуру. Для этого они использовали высокое давление и высокую температуру. Работы проводились в лаборатории Боварского научно-исследовательского института экспериментальной геохимии и геофизики.
Как сообщают авторы исследования в журнале Nature Materials, при температуре в 1000 градусов Цельсия и давлении от 10 до 15 гигапаскалей, атомы всех элементов стекла, то есть кремния, алюминия, бора и кислорода, начинали группироваться друг с другом. В результате образовывались кристаллоподобные структуры.
Эти структуры называются “паракристаллическими”, так как они все еще далеки от кристаллической структуры, но при этом сильно отличаются от аморфной структуры как у обычного стекла. Дальнейшее исследование с применением спектроскопических методов и компьютерного моделирования, показали, что в результате воздействия на оксидное стекло высокой температурой и давлением, возникает промежуточное состояние между кристаллическими структурами и аморфной неоднородностью.

Почему оксидное стекло после обработки стало прочнее
Как сообщают исследователи, после того, как температура и давление пришли в норму, паракристаллические структуры в алюмосиликатном стекле сохранились. При этом его прочность возросла во много раз. В то же время паракристаллические структуры практически не влияют на прозрачность стекла.
Но за счет чего вообще увеличилась прочность? По словам ученых, ударные нагрузки, которые приводят к разрушению обычного стекла, в паракристаллическом стекле направлены против паракристаллических структур. Проще говоря, в области удара эти структуры “растворяются”, то есть становятся опять аморфными. К слову, подобного результата ранее удалось добиться сотрудникам монреальского Университета Макгилла, которые создали небьющееся стекло на основе структуры панциря моллюсков. Правда, они использовали совсем иную технологию.

Новая технология может быть использована не только в технике, но и многих других отраслях. Причем авторы планируют совершенствовать ее и получить в ближайшие годы еще более прочное и совершенное стекло. По их мнению, потенциал для улучшения стекла, как материала, еще не исчерпан.
