Выбросы метана в атмосферу резко увеличились
Впервые ученые обнаружили, что в атмосферу было выброшено большое количество метана в 2006 году, однако до последнего момента оставалось загадкой откуда происходит утечка. Кроме того, было непонятно — выброс был разовым или это тенденция. Впоследствии выяснилось, что утечка метана постоянная, в результате чего содержание газа в атмосфере за последние 16 лет резко подскочило.
Ранее считалось, что основным источником метана в атмосфере, как и углекислого газа, является деятельность человека. Однако за последние 16 лет не было никакого всплеска деятельности, которая могла бы повлиять на резкое увеличение выбросов. Пока ученые пытались понять откуда происходит утечка, в 2013 году количество выбросов метана стало увеличиваться. Причем интенсивность загадочной утечки увеличивалась с каждым годом.

В 2020 году содержание метана в атмосфере стало увеличиваться самыми быстрыми темпами за всю историю наблюдений. При этом многие исследования, которые проводились начиная с 2019 года, показали, что причиной выбросов являются тропические водно-болотные угодья. Основная их часть находятся в Африке.
По мнению экспертов, в последние десятилетия водно-болотные угодья стали занимать больше площадь. На них выросло больше растений, при разложении которых образуется метан. В недавнем же исследовании, которое было опубликовано в журнале Global Biogeochemical Cycles, ученые обнаружили, что нынешние тенденции аналогичны росту метана в момент потепления во время последнего ледникового периода.

Исследования ледяных кернов возрастом 800 тысяч лет показали, что ледниковый период завершался в три этапа. В период первой фазы, в атмосфере постепенно повышалось содержание метана и углекислого газа. В результате глобальное потепление происходило постепенно в течение нескольких тысяч лет. Ранее мы рассказывали, что эта фаза потепления могла начаться из-за океанических течений.
Затем в какой-то момент произошло резкое потепление климата в результате связанное с выбросами большого количества метана. Как сообщают исследователи, эта фаза длилась всего несколько десятилетий. То есть скорость изменения климата была в какой-то момент колоссальной. Обширные пространства ледяной тундры быстро превратились в тропические луга, на которых паслись бегемоты. Источником выбросов метана, по мнению исследователей, были все те же водно-болотистые угодья.

Метан является мощным парниковым газом, поэтому интенсивный рост его содержания в атмосфере, теоретически, может привести к гораздо более быстрому изменению климата, чем ожидают ученые. Конечно, пока нет никаких доказательств, что это обязательно произойдет. Последний раз это происходило во время ледникового периода. В настоящее же время условия на планете совсем иные.
