В районе Новой Зеландии тихоокеанская тектоническая плита уходит под Австралийскую плиту. Этот участок называется зоной субдукции Хикуранги. Процесс погружения одной плиты под другую всегда сопровождается множеством землетрясений, и данный участок не является исключением. Более того, в этом районе часто происходят так называемые “медленные”, или “длительные” землетрясения, которые иногда длятся месяцами. Это довольно редкое и плохо изученное явление, которому до последнего момента не было точного объяснения. Теперь же, наблюдая за зоной субдукции Хикуранги, ученые пришли к выводу, что землетрясения связаны с подземным резервуаром. Он обеспечивает медленное скольжение тектонических плит друг относительно друга.

Что такое медленное землетрясение
Медленные землетрясения науке известны не так давно, поэтому о них крайне мало информации. Считается, что они происходят в результате медленного скольжения тектонических плит. В отличие от обычных землетрясений, как мы сказали выше, медленные могут длиться от нескольких дней до нескольких месяцев, а в некоторых случаях они могут длиться даже десятилетиями. Например, самое долгое известное науке медленное землетрясение происходило 32 года. Закончилось оно мощным землетрясением магнитудой более 8 баллов, которое произошло в 1861 году возле острова Суматра.
Как и обычные землетрясения, медленные происходят в результате извержения энергии, скопившийся из-за движения тектонических плит. Разница заключается лишь в том, что высвобождение энергии происходит постепенно. Сами по себе медленные землетрясения не такие опасные, так как они более слабые. Однако способны провоцировать мощные “скоростные” землетрясения, так нагружают и деформируют зоны, примыкающие к разлому. Именно так и произошло после упомянутого выше 32-летнего сейсмического события.

Медленные землетрясения происходят в результате плавного скольжения одной тектонической плиты под другой
Согласно одной из версий, медленное скольжение происходит на участках, где содержатся флюиды, то есть грунт с большим количеством воды. Избыточное давление жидкости обеспечивает плавность и замедленное скольжение плит. Однако связь между этими процессами и флюидами в природных системах остается малоизученной. В основном вся информация получена лишь в результате моделирования. Теперь же у ученых появилась возможность детально изучить медленные землетрясения и их природу в полевых условиях.
Подземное озеро в Тихом океане
В недавнем исследовании ученые обнаружили большое количество воды в зоне субдукции Хикуранги. Однако изначально их интересовала даже не вода, а ушедший под землю вулкан. При погружении одной плиты под другую, под землей оказываются и все ее геологические образования, в том числе и вулканы.
Некоторые из таких погребенных вулканов были обнаружены на участке разлома. Чтобы изучить один из таких вулканов более детально, ученые пробурили скважину и извлекли керн. В итоге они обнаружили, что почти половину его объема занимает вода, которая содержится в пористой вулканической породе. Как сообщают исследователи, нормальная океанская кора, возрастом 7-10 миллионов лет, не может содержать такое количество воды.

Вулканические породы в зоне субдукции Хикуранги содержат большое количество воды
Надо сказать, что в результате субдукции плиты, то есть погружения, она обычно быстро обезвоживается. Но в данном случае вода сохранилась благодаря пористым вулканическим породам, которые словно губка ее задерживают. Об этом сотрудники Техасского университета сообщают в своем исследовании. опубликованном в журнале Science Advances.
Из всего вышесказанного следует, что для медленного скольжения требуется не только вода, но и подходящая порода, которая ее задерживает. По мнению исследователей, им удалось обнаружить действительно яркую иллюстрацию взаимосвязи между флюидами и особенностями движения тектонических плит. Теперь ученые планируют получить больше образцов для изучения подводного озера и его влияния на сейсмическую активность в регионе, чтобы окончательно доказать свое предположение.
