Ранее мы уже рассказывали, что в последнее время человечество стало активно использовать грунтовые воды для орошения. Масштабы откачки такие, что в США даже стали появляться разломы. Европа вообще лишилась большей части запасов пресной воды. По мнению авторов нынешней работы, откачка грунтовых вод затрагивает всю планету.
Как грунтовые воды влияют на полюса Земли
На первый взгляд, вода из грунтовых вод используется для местного сельского хозяйства либо промышленности, то есть она остается там же, где ее добыли. Однако на практике большая часть воды не впитывается в грунт, а испаряется и стекает в реки, откуда попадает в океаны. Соответственно, возникает тот же эффект, что и при таянии ледников.
Согласно предыдущим исследованиям, грунтовые воды повысили уровень мирового океана в период с 1993 по 2010 год на 6 миллиметров. Это всего 10% от общего повышения уровня воды за этот период времени.

Активное расходование грунтовых вод сильнее влияет на смещению полюсов, чем таяние ледяных шапок
При помощи спутниковой системы GRACE, измеряющей гравитацию Земли, ученые обнаружили, что перераспределение грунтовых вод не только влияют на дрейф географических полюсов, но и делает это более интенсивно, чем таяние ледяных шапок. Проще говоря, выкачивание грунтовых вод — это основная причина, из-за которых меняется наклон планеты.
Чтобы подтвердить эту версию, исследователи создали компьютерную модель, в которой не учли влияние грунтовых вод на перераспределение массы на планете. Как и предполагалось, результаты не совпали с фактическим изменением полюсов Земли. Но когда авторы работы добавили объем воды в 2150 гигатонн, что соответствует реальному расходу, результаты совпали. Об этом авторы работы сообщают в журнале Geophysical Research Letters.
Без грунтовых вод Северный полюс Земли был бы направлен на 78,5 сантиметра к западу от того места, где он находится сейчас. При этом скорость смещения составляла бы 4,4 сантиметра в год, что равно скорости движения континентов.
