Исследование отложений на дне показало, что невероятно мощные извержения этого вулкана периодически происходили в течение последних 50 тысяч лет. По мнению ученых, наиболее мощные извержения привели к изменению климата и экосистемы на всей планете. Но самое неприятное то, что извержение, теоретически, может повториться в скором времени, так как вулкан продолжает проявлять активность. Его извержение может привести к катастрофическим последствиям, масштабы которых сложно предсказать.

Подводный вулкан Марсили
Вулкан Марсили находится под водой на расстоянии в 175 км от Неаполя. Его высота составляет порядка 3000 метров, длина — 70 км, а ширина — 30 км. Вершина вулкана находится на глубине около 500 метров, поэтому просто так увидеть его невозможно.
По мнению Гвидо Вентуры, вулканолога итальянского Национального института геофизики и вулканологии, вулкан Марсили образовался примерно миллион лет назад. За многие тысячелетия на нем возникло около 80 активных конусов, а также множество трещин, из которых в настоящее время может вырываться лава.

Вулканические отложения обнаружены у берегов Италии
О существовании данного вулкана ученые узнали в 20-г годах прошлого века. Однако его исследования начались только в последнее десятилетие. Результаты вызвали у ученых беспокойство, так как извержение оценивается как вполне вероятное. Сама по себе магма и вулканический пепел не представляет такой опасности, как в случае извержения крупных вулканов на суше. Однако данное событие может стать причиной мощного и разрушительного цунами.
Что известно об извержении вулкана Марсили
Ученые из Университета штата Огайо в США и Института морских наук (CSIC) в Испании при помощи акустического исследования обнаружили мегапласты на дне моря возле вулкана. Для более детального изучения, они добыли керны, то есть образцы этих отложений. По мнению исследователей, мегапласты возникли в результате извержений вулкана.
Три из четырех мегапластов состоят из чередующихся вулканического песка и грязи, а один, наиболее плотный, представляет собой поток вулканического мусора. Это говорит об интенсивном извержении, которое было очень мощным и быстрым. Именно это извержение стало причиной изменения климата. Об этом исследователи сообщают в журнале Geology.

Извержение вулкана Марсили грозит мощным цунами
По мнению исследователей, извержения вулкана, в результате которого возникали отложения, происходили с определенной периодичностью. Однако, следует учитывать, что не каждое извержение вызывает образование мегаслоев. Например, в 2012 году произошло извержение вулкана Стромболи в Средиземном море. Оно вызвало мощное цунами, однако толщина слоя отложений на дне не превышала 10 сантиметров. Толщина же слоев возле вулкана Марсили составляет десятки метров, поэтому сложно себе представить насколько мощными были эти извержения.

Вулкан Марсили находится в вулканически активной территории, известной как Флегрейские поля. На этой территории находится вулкан Кампи Флегрей, который мог уничтожить неандертальцев, а также печально известный Везувий.
