Во время археологических раскопок в Смоленске в конце 60-х годов учеными была обнаружена берестяная грамота с загадочными линиями и знаками, датированная XII веком. Историческую ценность в этой находке признали не сразу, поэтому ее упоминаний не было в отчетах о смоленской археологической экспедиции. Впервые информация о грамоте появилась в научном журнале только в 1985 году. В этой же статье сообщалось, то артефакт был обнаружен во время раскопок 1952-1968 годов. Некоторые ученые интерпретировали знаки на полотне как древние руны, и даже дали расшифровку текста. Однако согласно недавнему исследованию, загадочные линии и знаки не являются рунами.

Ученые разгадали секрет берестяной грамоты, обнаруженной в Смоленске
Берестяная грамота из Смоленска
Обнаруженное в Смоленске полотно представляет собой тонкий, практически просвечивающийся слой бересты. Часть полотна была оборвана еще в древние времена, однако по обрывку нижнего края ученые выяснили, что длина грамоты составляла 13,5 сантиметров.
Так как возраст находки составляет сотни лет, разобрать что было написано на ней очень сложно. Однако можно отчетливо разобрать черточки, расположенные поперек полотна. Впервые расшифровку надписей предложил сам руководитель раскопок Даниил Авдусин вместе с историком и филологом Еленой Мельниковой.

Согласно их предположению, береста содержит текст: “Вискар приобрел этот участок земли”. Но не все лингвисты согласились с этой версией. В 2017 году лингвист Софья Стеблин-Каменская опубликовала свое исследование, согласно которому черточки на бересте вообще не являются рунами или какими либо другими знаками, имеющими отношение к письменности. Также были предложены некоторые другие варианты расшифровки. Поэтому вопрос достоверности каждой из них оставался открытым.
Что написано на древней берестяной грамоте
Согласно результатам недавнего исследования, проведенного сотрудниками Института археологии РАН и Государственного Исторического музея, на грамоте вообще нет текста. Однако на полотне есть два типа линий — одни нанесены специально человеческой рукой, а другие появились со временем в результате внешнего механического воздействия на бересту.
Чтобы отделить один тип линий от других, авторы работы использовали писало, древнерусский инструмент для письма, который представляет собой стержень из твердого материала, например кости, металла или дерева. С одной стороны он был заострен, а с другой край имел форму лопатки. Как сообщают авторы исследования, оба типа линий на бересте сильно отличаются друг от друга как по глубине, так и по ширине. Одни достаточно тонкие, примерно 0,2 мм, а другие толстые, имеют ширину 0,5-0,6 мм.

Тонкие линии располагаются на бересте хаотично, в то время как толстые направлены строго поперек прожилок древесной коры. По мнению исследователей, грамота, скорее всего, представляет собой разлинеенное полотно для письма.
Для подтверждения своих слов, авторы работы сравнивают смоленскую грамоту с грамотой, найденной в Московском Кремле при раскопках в 2007 году. Московская грамота разлинована тоже поперек прожилок. Расстояние между линиями составляет менее 1 см. При этом некоторые строки заполнены буквами, но основная часть грамоты не заполнена и напоминает ту, что была обнаружена в Смоленске.

Авторы исследования обращают внимание на один интересный момент — письмо поперек прожилок бересты было характерным для московских авторов грамот. Новгородские же тексты были написаны вдоль прожилок. Однако в 80-х годах, когда было опубликовано первое исследование, это не было известно.
Учитывая этот факт, авторы предполагают, что грамота имеет московское происхождение, а значит она не может относиться к XII веку. Скорее всего полотно было создано тогда же, когда и другие московские берестяные грамоты, а также грамота с загадочным предупреждением, обнаруженная в Рязани — в XV-XVI веках. В настоящее время полотно хранится в фонде Отдела археологии Государственного исторического музея.
