Изначально предполагалось, что водород улетучился в космос, однако впоследствии выяснилось, что этот процесс очень медленный, в результате чего на Марсе должно было остаться до 90% воды. Некоторые ученые предполагают, что вода впитывалась в кору и была в итоге заключена в минералы. Теперь же ученые-планетологи предполагают, что им удалось найти огромное месторождение водяного льда недалеко от экватора Марса. Этого объема воды достаточно, чтобы затопить ею всю планету.

Почти два десятилетия назад исследователи обнаружили несколько необычных глубоких отложений под формацией Medusae Fossae (MFF). Последние данные говорят о том, что эти отложения на самом деле являются льдом.
Формацией Медуза Фосса по площади составляет около одной пятой части США. Она содержит множество элементов, образованных ветром. Считается, что формация является крупнейшим источником пыли на Марсе. Она простирается до кратера Гейла, который в настоящее время исследует аппарат Curiosity.

Автоматическая межпланетная станция Mars Express, принадлежащая Европейскому космическому агентству, показала, что под слоем пыли содержится столько льда, что вода, если бы он растаял, покрыла бы весь Марс слоем глубиной от 1,5 до 2,7 метра. Например, такое же примерно количество воды содержит Красное море на Земле.
Как ученые обнаружили лед на Марсе
Ученые предположили, что под формацией Медуза Фосса содержится лед, еще во время самых первых наблюдений в 2007 году. Для радаров структура под формацией была относительно прозрачной и имела низкую плотность. Поэтому не было сомнений в том, что это была не твердая порода. Однако ученые не могли исключать того, что радар обнаружил отложения пыли или, например, вулканического пепла.

Получить более точные данные позволил радар MARSIS, которым оснащен аппарат Mars Express. Исследование показало, что отложения оказались еще толще, чем предполагалось ранее — глубина слоя достигает 3,7 км. Если бы отложения были пылью, они бы уплотнились под собственным весом. В результате структура была бы более плотной, чем есть на самом деле.
Когда ученые смоделировали отложения из различных материалов, ни один из них не показал свойства, которыми на самом деле обладает MFF, за исключением льда. По словам исследователей, радиолокационные сигналы указывают на то, что под слоем пыли находится слоистый лед. Аналогичные сигналы исходят от полярных шапок Красной планеты, которые, как известно, содержат много льда. Об этом сообщает European Space Agency. Получается, не вся вода на Марсе испарилась или окаменела. Часть, судя по всему, все же сохранилась в виде льда.

Откуда взялось огромное количество льда на Марсе
Ученые считают, что под MFF находятся слои пыли и льда. Толщина внешнего слоя пыли или пепла составляет несколько сотен метров. Именно этот слой, скорее всего, сохранил лед на поверхности Марса. Однако ученые не знают как долго он здесь находится и откуда вообще взялся.
Как сообщают исследователи, анализ бросает вызов пониманию того, как сформировалась данная формация. При этом неизвестно каким был Марс, когда возникли ледяные отложения. Если удастся подтвердить, что ученые не ошиблись, и под слоем пыли действительно находится лед, это изменит понимание истории климата на Красной планете. Поэтому в настоящее время вопросов больше, чем ответов.
