Что такое атлантическая меридиональная опрокидывающая циркуляция
Влияния океанических течений на климат сложно недооценить. Ранее мы рассказывали, что даже последний ледниковый период завершился именно благодаря океаническим течениям. Это является очередным подтверждением тому, что изменения в океане могут спровоцировать самые непредсказуемые климатические процессы на Земле.
Течение, о котором сейчас идет речь, то есть AMOC, играет важную роль в перемещении тепла и пресной воды по Атлантическому океану. Оно состоит из сети глубинных и приповерхностных течений, в которую входит Гольфстрим. Благодаря этим течениям теплая приповерхностная соленая вода из тропиков переносится в Северную Атлантику.
Ближе к Северному полюсу эта вода охлаждается и частично превращается в лед. Оставшаяся же вода опускается на глубину и опять перемещается на юг. Благодаря AMOC, в Северо-Западной Европе и Северной Атлантике климат в настоящее время намного теплее, чем должен быть.

Атлантические течения в настоящее время самые медленные за всю историю наблюдений
Чтобы ответить на этот вопрос, сотрудники Утрехтского университета в Нидерландах создали точную модель, которая моделирует поток поверхностной пресной воды вокруг Северной Атлантики в течение 2200 лет. Согласно задумке ученых, движение пресной воды в Атлантике вокруг 34-й параллели способно помочь спрогнозировать остановку AMOC.
Исследователи сравнили объем пресной воды, перемещаемой из южной части Атлантики, согласно модели, с реальными данными. В результате пришли к выводу, что AMOC находится на пути к “перелому”. Коллапс действительно может произойти в ближайшее время. Об этом исследователи сообщают в журнале Science Advances.

В Европе может повториться малый ледниковый период
К чему приведет исчезновения AMOC? После «переломного момента» распределение тепла по мировому океану и за его пределами резко изменится. Скорее всего в Европе повторится малый ледниковый период, аналогичный тому, который произошел в XIV—XIX веках. Ученые полагают, что причиной его наступления стало замедление течения Гольфстрим в прошлом. В настоящее же время речь идет не только о Гольфстриме, а всем AMOC. Можно предположить, что последствия будут еще более серьезными.
Однако следует учитывать, что мы вступили в период глобального потепления, то есть в настоящее время климат более теплый. Кроме того, как мы уже рассказывали, произошел сильный нагрев воды в океане. Поэтому можно с уверенностью сказать лишь о том, что в Европе климат станет намного холоднее, но, насколько именно похолодает климат, пока неизвестно.
