Откуда на пляжах берутся ракушки
Ракушки на пляжах появляются благодаря моллюскам, которые обитают в морях и океанах. Науке известно существовании примерно 200 тысяч мягкотелых созданий, которые создают панцири из содержащегося в окружающей среде кальция. Раковины моллюсков увеличиваются по мере их роста, когда кальций накладывается на них слой за слоем.
Моллюск отращивают панцири сразу в нескольких целях. Во-первых, раковина защищает их от хищников и физических травм. Во-вторых, панцирь служит прочным каркасом для поддержания мягких тканей моллюска. В-третьих, твердая оболочка помогает моллюскам удерживать влагу и предотвращать высыхание тела.

Когда моллюск умирают, их мягкие ткани разлагаются или становятся пищей для других водных организмов. Потом многие из них оказываются на берегу, потому что их туда перекидывают сильные волны. Иногда панцири моллюсков ломаются на части, поэтому на пляжах можно встретить поврежденные ракушки. Обычно туристы берут с собой на память целые образцы, а ведь именно они приносят природе наибольшую пользу.

Для чего животным раковины
Моллюск отращивают раковины для защиты, а для чего они нужны другим животным на суше?
По данным IFL Science, разбросанные по пляжу панцири моллюсков используются птицами для того, чтобы строить прочные гнезда. Также некоторые виды птиц проглатывают обломки раковин для того, чтобы измельчить пищу в желудке и тем самым ускорить пищеварение.
Крабы-отшельники используют выброшенные на берег ракушки моллюсков в качестве жилища. Эти ракообразные имеют мягкое и уязвимое брюшко, которое не покрыто твердым панцирем, как у крабов других видов. Поэтому они нуждаются в дополнительной защите, которую находят в пустых раковинах морских моллюсков. По мере роста, крабы-отшельники могут менять ракушки на более крупные.

Например, свои яйца в пустые раковины откладывают морские улитки, раки и лобстеры. Появившееся на свет потомство может использовать раковины для защиты до тех пор, пока не будет готово выйти наружу.

В каких странах нельзя собирать ракушки
В 2014 году ученые оценили, на сколько процентов уменьшилось количество ракушек в одном из пляжей Испании. Оказалось, что с 1978 по 2010 год, количество морских раковин там сократилось на пугающие 60%. А это значит, что десятки, а может и сотни видов животных остались без строительных материалов, инкубаторов для яиц и жилья. В долгосрочной перспективе это может привести к сокращению их численности.
В некоторых странах власти борются с теми, кто собирает ракушки. Например, в Великобритании с 1949 года действует закон, запрещающий забирать из пляжей все что угодно природного происхождения.

В США сбор пустых ракушек разрешен, но некоторые виды моллюсков находятся под строгой охраной, и туристы по незнанию могут влипнуть в большие неприятности. В 2018 году в американском штате Флорида была задержана женщина, которая забрала 40 ракушек из пляжа Ки-Уэст. Оказалось, что они принадлежали вымирающему виду, поэтому ее задержали на 15 суток и заставили выплатить штраф в размере 500 долларов.
