В июне 2024 года у аэрокосмического агентства NASA возникла серьезная проблема. Несмотря на обнаружение утечки гелия с космического корабля Starliner, руководство все равно решило использовать его для отправки двух астронавтов на МКС. Утечка была небольшая, поэтому все предположили, что газа хватит для полета туда и обратно. Но все оказалось гораздо серьезнее: впоследствии было найдено еще несколько отверстий, через которые выходил гелий. Также во время подлета к космической станции, у корабля отказали некоторые двигатели. Астронавты должны были вернуться на Землю 14 июня, но их полет обратно многократно переносился и они до сих пор находятся в космосе. И это не единственная проблема, с которой в последнее время столкнулись американские астронавты.

Астронавты NASA застряли на МКС из-за двух проблем. Во-первых, до полета была обнаружена утечка гелия — этот газ необходим для создания давления в баках с топливом и окислителем для их подачи в двигатели. Во время полета произошло еще четыре утечки, а также у космического корабля Starliner отказали пять из 28 двигателей для маневрирования в космосе. Предполагалось, что миссия продлится примерно неделю. Астронавты Барри Уилмор и Сунита Уильямс отправились на МКС 5 июня 2024 года, и должны были вернуться обратно 14 июня. Но руководство NASA несколько раз переносило их возвращение, при этом уверяя, что никакой угрозы безопасности астронавтов утечка гелия не несет. Если бы она полностью вытекла, корабль Starliner мог потерять управление. Но для успешного завершения миссии требуется гелия на 7 часов полета, в то время как в резервуарах газа осталось на 70 часов полета после отстыковки.
Несмотря на все это, после дополнительных встреч на высшем уровне, NASA решило перенести возвращение экипажа Starliner на июль 2024 года. Никаких подробностей о причинах такого решения названо не было.

Представители NASA подчеркнули, что их астронавты не «застряли» на МКС. По их словам, космический корабль Starliner сертифицирован для возвращения на Землю в случае экстренных ситуаций.
На данный момент бортинженеры заняты изучением космического корабля, они хотят разобраться в глубинных причинах возникших неисправностей. Сделать это позже будет невозможно, потому что капсула с экипажем опустится на Землю на парашюте, а космический корабль сгорит в атмосфере. Он будет уничтожен, и у инженеров больше не будет возможности узнать, из-за чего возникла поломка.

Прямая трансляция этого события началась за три часа до выхода в космос. Астронавты надели скафандры, после чего был открыт люк наружу. Но внезапно Трейси Дайсон объявила, что в ее костюм вытекла вода, которая используется для охлаждения. Руководство NASA посчитало, что ничего плохого произойти не должно, но перенесло вылазку в открытый космос на неопределенный срок из-за риска попадания воды в электронику.
