Скорость вращения тела зависит разных факторов. Одним из них является распределения его массы. Например, все наверняка помнят, как мы в детстве раскачивались на качелях — поджимая и выставляя ноги придавали качелям ускорение. Используя этот же принцип, фигуристы изменяют скорость своего вращения на льду, например, вначале прижимают руки к телу, чтобы ускориться, а затем вытягивают их, чтобы замедлиться. То есть, по мере того, как массы удаляются от оси вращения, скорость вращения тела замедляется.
Только недавно ученые поняли, что то же самое происходит и с нашей планетой. Ледяные шапки, сконцентрированные на плюсах, то есть возле оси вращения, тают. В результате масса переносится ближе к экватору, соответственно, Земля начинает замедляться словно фигуристка, вытягивающая руки во время вращения. И чем выше температура на планете, тем быстрее тают ледники, и тем сильнее замедляется скорость вращения.

Как сообщается в исследовании, опубликованном в журнале Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, уже сейчас последствия изменения климата вносят свой вклад в удлинение суток. С 1900 года по настоящее время климат привел к увеличению продолжительности дня на 0,8 миллисекунды.
Если глобальное потепление не остановится, к 2100 году этот эффект удвоится, в результате чего сутки, предположительно, увеличатся на 2,2 миллисекунды по сравнению с тем же базовым уровнем.
