В далеком 1914 году, в 800 километрах к северу от Аделаиды, 14-летний Вилли Хатчисон остался в лагере, пока его отец с другими мужчинами отправились на поиски золота. Скучающий мальчик решил прогуляться по окрестностям и, сам того не ожидая, сделал находку, изменившую судьбу этого места навсегда. Когда взрослые вернулись в лагерь и обнаружили его пустым, они не на шутку встревожились. Однако вечером Вилли триумфально появился с мешком опалов на плече. Это открытие положило начало опаловой лихорадке, и с тех пор Кубер-Педи стал источником 70% мировой добычи этих драгоценных камней.

Режиссер Джордж Миллер увековечил сюрреалистичные пейзажи Кубер-Педи, изрытые ямами и усеянные ржавыми автомобилями, в своем культовом фильме 1985 года «Безумный Макс: Под куполом грома». Примечательно, что для создания постапокалиптической атмосферы съемочной группе почти не потребовалось дополнительных декораций — Кубер-Педи уже выглядел как место из далекого, мрачного будущего.
