Панцири этих животных растут слоями, действуя как «резервуар экологической информации», подобно годичным кольцам. Как объясняют исследователи в своей новой статье, эти данные можно использовать как инструмент для реконструкции истории взрывов ядерных бомб. Полученные данные могут принести немало информации не только о секретных испытаниях, но и об их последствиях, которыми раньше было принято пренебрегать. Какой-то мониторинг проводился, но он был фактическим, а теперь можно оценить последствия с высоты прожитых лет.
Такие взрывы не проходят бесследно. Но порой их следы находят в самых неожиданных местах.
Ученые из Университета Нью-Мексико и Национальной лаборатории Лос-Аламоса – места рождения первых атомных бомб – собрали пять образцов из различных точек планеты, связанных с использованием ядерных бомб.
Необычные следы урана были обнаружены в панцирях зеленой морской черепахи из района Маршалловых Островов, пустынной черепахи из юго-западной части штата Юта, речной черепахи из Саванна-Ривер-Сайт в Южной Каролине и коробчатой черепахи из резервации Ок-Ридж в США (Восточный Теннесси).

То, что обнаружили исследователи в панцирях исследованных черепах, тесно связано с ядерными событиями. Раковина из резервации Ок-Ридж содержала следы урана в своих слоях, образовавшихся в период с 1955 по 1962 год, достигнув пика в 1958 году, что напрямую связано с выбросом в воздух высокообогащенного урана в этом районе.

Особый интерес представляет панцирь черепахи с Маршалловых островов. Эта отдаленная группа островов служила тихоокеанским полигоном США в период с 1946 по 1958 год, и именно там было проведено около 67 ядерных испытаний, оставив после себя следы, которые просто невозможно стереть.
Даже сложно представить, что в таком райском месте проводились десятки взрывов атомных бомб.
Панцирь зеленой морской черепахи, использованный в еще одном исследовании, был извлечен из брюха тигровой акулы, пойманной возле атолла Эниветак в 1978 году — примерно через 20 лет после окончания ядерных испытаний на этом полигоне. Черепаха была относительно молодой и вряд ли уже родилась на момент взрыва, однако на ее панцире все еще присутствовали следы урана. Это опять же говорит о том, что «шлейф» взрыва все равно сохраняется в окружающей среде еще очень долгое время.
Исследователи подозревают, что наличие радионуклидов в панцирях черепах показывает, как работы по очистке атолла поднимают старые загрязненные отложения. С другой стороны, это может указывать на то, что остаточное загрязнение от бомбы все еще присутствовало в лагуне атолла и попало в панцирь черепахи через ее рацион, состоящий из морских трав и водорослей.

Животные, используемые для изучения атомных взрывов
Черепахи — не единственные живые существа, которых можно использовать для отслеживания истории атомных бомб. Ранее для этой же цели использовались скелеты кораллов и раковины моллюсков. А еще для «записи» следов испытаний использовались глаза самого долгоживущего позвоночного — гренландской акулы. Этот метод тоже был удивительно эффективным.

Однако исследователи утверждают, что именно черепахи являются особенно полезными инструментами для составления единой истории ядерной активности на Земле. Таким образом, они надеются, что их можно будет использовать для дальнейших исследований того, как атомные бомбы изменили нашу планету.

При этом «атомный след» будут находить и в других местах. В частности, сейчас производится сброс воды с атомной станции «Фукусима-1», реактор которой был разрушен после землетрясения в 2011 году.
