Многие из них такие же яркие, как наше Солнце, но еще больше звезд сияют намного ярче. Так почему же, в таком случае, космос не наполнен ослепительным светом? Астрономы справедливо полагают, что ответ может заключаться в расстоянии – многие наблюдаемые нами звезды находятся очень далеко от Земли. А чем дальше находится звезда, тем менее яркой она выглядит. Но это – лишь часть головоломки, различные решения которой предлагались на протяжении веков. Теперь же, с помощью космического телескопа Джеймса Уэбба, исследователи предлагают новое решение знаменитого парадокса.

Парадокс Ольберса
Парадокс Ольберса назван в честь Генриха Вильгельма Ольберса, немецкого астронома, который популяризировал его в 19 веке. Теперь давайте применим эту аналогию к ночному небу. Если Вселенная бесконечна и полна звезд, то во всех направлениях должно быть по звезде, независимо от того, как далеко они находятся. Свет от этих звезд в конце концов должен дойти до нас, даже если на это потребуется очень много времени. Ночное небо должно быть таким же ярким, как и дневное, или даже ярче. Но почему в реальности все не так?

Ответ может показаться очевидным: звезды находятся слишком далеко, а еще они слишком тусклые, чтобы наблюдать их невооруженным взглядом. Вот только это неудовлетворительное объяснение – даже если звезды находятся очень далеко, а свет от них очень тусклый, их количество должно компенсировать и расстояние и яркость.

Следовательно, если на небе достаточно звезд во всех направлениях, их совокупный свет должен сделать ночное небо ярким. Но в реальности этой яркости вновь недостаточно. Даже если предположить, что Вселенная однородна и статична, нам понадобится около 10 Солнц в каждом направлении, чтобы получить «желаемый» результат.
Более того, Вселенная неоднородна – в ней есть области с различной плотностью и температурой. Часть света, исходящего от звезд, может быть заблокирована или рассеяна пылью, газом и другими объектами в космосе. К тому же, Вселенная не статична. Напротив, она динамична и развивается.
Это означает, что звезды не вечны, а некоторые из них, давно исчезли, уменьшив свой вклад в яркость ночного неба.

Теоретически, единственным «космическим оптическим фоном», который должен присутствовать во Вселенной, является свет, излучаемый звездами, который должен быть ограничен галактиками и более крупными скоплениями материи, плюс немного дополнительного отраженного света изнутри тех же структур. Но с Земли и даже из космоса в пределах нашей Солнечной системы мы не можем провести эти измерения – там слишком много «рассеянного света» от нашей звезды, отражающегося от крошечных частиц в межпланетном пространстве, чтобы обнаружить истинную темноту.
В пространстве между этими галактиками существует множество неразличимых слабых галактик, которые вносят свой вклад в космический оптический фон.
