Настолько, что преодолеть их удалось только с помощью зонда Messenger, запущенного в 2004 году – этот космический аппарат дважды пролетел мимо Меркурия и вышел на орбиту в 2011 году, позволив астрономам составить подробную карту поверхности планеты. Учитывая условия и экстремальные температуры, что царят в этом странном мире, вопрос о существовании в нем жизни может показаться абсурдным, однако результаты последних исследований свидетельствуют о том, что в прошлом на самой маленькой планете Солнечной системы были регионы с подходящими условиями для биологической жизни.

Мессенджер – эпохальное путешествие
Легендарная миссия NASA Messenger стартовала летом 2004 года и завершилась крушением на поверхность Меркурия весной 2015 года. За это время космический аппарат собрал огромное количество данных и вышел на орбиту планеты. Наиболее заметным открытием Messenger стало подтверждение наличия большого количества водяного льда в постоянно затененных кратерах на полюсах Меркурия.
Так, первый облет показал, что кратеры планеты лишь наполовину глубже, чем на Луне, а в одном из них были обнаружены свидетельства наличия вулканических жерл.

Зонд Messenger приближается к Меркурию
Messenger также обнаружил огромные скалы на вершинах разломов земной коры Меркурия – эти структуры указывают на то, что планета, остывшая вскоре после формирования, сжалась на треть больше, чем считалось ранее. Более того, оказалось, что первая планета от Солнца была геологически активна почти 4 миллиарда лет назад.

Ледняки на Меркурии
И все же, несмотря на все достижения Messenger, самое значимое открытие последних лет заключается в обнаружении на Меркурии соляных ледников и содержащихся в них летучих соединениях таких как натрий, калий, сера и хлор, которые, как ранее полагали ученые, давным—давно исчезли из—за близости Солнца и отсутствия атмосферы на планете.
Сосредоточившись на двух областях – кратере Радитлади и регионе на северном полюсе под названием Бореальный хаос – ученые из Института планетологии пришли к выводу, что значительное количество летучих соединений содержится в подземных соляных ледниках, которые образовались при столкновении астероида с поверхностью планеты.
