Почему звезды изменяют яркость
Многие объекты в космосе на самом деле не совсем такие, какими мы их видим. В том числе и мерцание звезд, которое часто можно наблюдать с Земли, не имеет ничего общего с самими звездами. Все дело в том, что нас от космоса отделяет атмосфера. Она кажется абсолютно прозрачной и стабильной, но на самом деле атмосфера подвижна и напоминает многослойное, волнистое стекло.
Когда свет проходит сквозь это неоднородное “стекло”, он многократно преломляется. Причем эти преломления нестабильны из-за нескольких факторов, которые и являются причиной мерцания. Один из них — это турбулентность. Воздух в атмосфере постоянно находится в движении. Например, когда солнечная энергия нагревает воздух, теплые потоки поднимаются вверх и смешиваются с холодным воздухом.

Кроме того, воздушные потоки сталкиваются с горами и разбиваются на множество закрученных потоков. Все это становится причиной турбулентности, то есть завихрений в атмосфере, которые постоянно находятся в движении. К слову, по этой же причине самолеты во время полета иногда проваливаются в «воздушные ямы», о которых мы рассказывали ранее.
Еще одна причина мерцания связана с разницей плотности между различными слоями атмосферы. Причем плотность тоже непостоянна. Соответственно, как уже было сказано выше, показатель преломления воздуха непостоянен. Когда свет проходит через различные среды, каждый раз претерпевает крошечное отклонение, которое воспринимается нашим глазом как мерцание.
По этой причине профессиональные телескопы ученые устанавливают только в определенных местах, где атмосфера вносит минимальное влияние на свет космических объектов. Как несложно догадаться, такими местами являются горы.

Почему звезды меняют цвет
Изменение цвета звезд связан с теми же причинами, что и мерцание. Как известно, они светят всеми цветами радуги. Однако атмосфера служит своего рода светофильтром, то есть она подавляет часть спектра электромагнитного излучения. Например, именно по этой причине Солнце нам кажется желтым, хотя на самом деле оно является белым.
В то же время атмосфера нестабильна. Соответственно, поглощение электромагнитного излучения происходит тоже непостоянно. Это и заставляет звезды, а точнее свет, который достигает сетчатки нашего глаза, переливаться разными цветами.
Почему некоторые звезды не мигают
Итак, с мерцанием и изменением цвета звезд мы разобрались. Но почему же одни звезды мерцают интенсивно, другие еле заметно, а третьи вообще не мерцают? Все дело в том, что интенсивность мерцания зависит от нескольких разных факторов. Одним из них является видимый диаметр источника света — чем меньше диаметр, тем сильнее мерцание. По этой причине не мерцает Солнце и планеты, которые можно наблюдать при помощи любительского телескопа.

Также немаловажным фактором является длина волны света. Если она короткая, то свет сильнее преломляется, в результате чего мерцание становится более интенсивным. Например, звезды с красным свечением, такие как Антарес из созвездия Скорпиона, мерцают менее интенсивно, чем синие, такие как вышеупомянутая звезда Сириус.
Кроме того, мерцание более сильное, если смотреть на звезду невооруженным глазом, так как диаметр зрачка в среднем составляем 6 мм, то есть захватывает не так много света. Если же смотреть на звезду через линзу, которая собирает более широкий луч света, мерцание будет слабым или вообще не будет наблюдаться, но изображение при этом станет более размытым.
