Мозг Брока
Будучи практикующим врачом, Брока проанализировал мозг нескольких умерших пациентов, которые на протяжении всей своей жизни страдали от проблем с речью. Он обнаружил, что у большинства из них была повреждена определенная область в левой лобной доле, и завершил свою лекцию знаменитой фразой: “Мы говорим левым полушарием». Этим он разрушил научную догму, согласно которой все здоровые органы симметричны, и открыл новую область научных исследований.
После открытия Брока различия между левым и правым полушариями мозга стали рассматриваться как свидетельство превосходства нашего вида над остальными.
Отметим, что физическая симметрия человеческого тела некогда считалась божественным творением – Исаак Ньютон, например, писал об этой идеальной симметрии. Брока, однако, думал иначе и обращал больше внимание на ассиметрию, полагая, что именно она в ответе за нашу способность к обучению и последующее создание цивилизации.

Подобные идеи, разумеется, были отражением предубеждений того времени, а неврологических доказательств катастрофически не хватало. И все же открытие Брока изменило наше понимание мозга и его устройства. Правда, научному сообществу потребовалось больше ста лет чтобы признать, что асимметрия мозга является универсальным атрибутом животного царства.

Обоняние
Сегодня все больше научных исследований свидетельствуют о том, что мы, вероятно, недооцениваем интеллект и способности других животных. Все потому, что их видение мира сильно (а зачастую кардинально) отличается от нашего и едва ли зависит от размера мозга. Более того, животные во многом превосходят нас с вами – они лучше распознают запахи, легко ориентируются в незнакомой местности и обладают отличной памятью.
Несмотря на то, что человеческий мозг относительно большой по сравнению с другими видами, часть нашего мозга, отвечающая за обоняние – обонятельная луковица – сравнительно мала. У акул, например, она занимает целых две трети мозга! Между тем, самые большие обонятельные луковицы среди млекопитающих принадлежат грызунам – агути и капибаре у двух грызунов (агути и капибара). Отменным обонянием также обладают медведи – их обонятельная луковица в пять раз больше, чем у людей, хотя размер их мозга составляет всего треть от нашего.

Исключительное обоняние, которым обладают многие виды, обусловлено не только различиями в анатомии мозга, но и результатом адаптации к носу. В этом смысле речь идет не столько о том, какие виды превосходят нас, сколько о том, какие виды еще хуже нас.

Ориентация в пространстве
Какими бы удивительными ни были наши интеллектуальные способности, мы едва ли сориентируемся в незнакомой местности без карт и навигационных устройств. Однако некоторые животные могут найти дорогу домой за тысячи километров без доступа к Google maps. Недавно биологи узнали как это возможно – оказалось, что голуби легко ориентируются в пространстве благодаря совокупность клеток в их мозге, которые значительно реагируют на магнитную стимуляцию.

Каждая клетка мозга в группе реагирует уникальным сигнальным паттерном на определенную напряженность магнитного поля, которую голубь способен интерпретировать. Голуби используют эту способность для обнаружения изменений в магнитном поле Земли в зависимости от местоположения, расшифровывая сигналы, чтобы определить свое точное географическое положение.

Фотографическая память
Возможно вы удивитесь, но фотографической памятью обладают не только люди (фотографическая память позволяет запоминать большие объемы информации при воздействии на нее в течение короткого периода времени), но и шимпанзе. У них, прямо как у нас с вами, способность четко и быстро запоминать информацию ослабевает с возрастом.

Изучая способность шимпанзе запоминать информацию, исследователи обнаружили, что молодые особи лучше запоминают последовательность чисел, чем взрослые люди. Было даже обнаружено, что время, в течение которого шимпанзе знакомились с цифрами, не влияло на их запоминание. Это заставило ученых предположить, что шимпанзе запоминают информацию практически мгновенно.

Почему человеческий мозг уникален?
И все же, несмотря на все проигранные нашим собратьям битвы, существует целый ряд когнитивных способностей, присущих исключительно человеку, с которыми не может сравниваться ни один вид живых существ. Так, юмор, принятие решений, планирование, мораль, религиозность и даже подверженность нервно-психическим заболеваниям свойственны только людям.
Еще одной отличительной чертой нашего мозга является уникальное взаимодействие нейронов друг с другом, которое происходит посредством электрических импульсов, вырабатываемых ионными каналами, управляющими потоком ионов, таких как калий и натрий.
Мозг – самый сложный орган человеческого тела
В результате удивительного нового открытия нейробиологи Массачусетского технологического института показали, что человеческие нейроны имеют гораздо меньшее количество этих каналов, чем ожидалось, по сравнению с нейронами других млекопитающих.
Исследователи предполагают, что это уменьшение плотности каналов, возможно, помогло человеческому мозгу эволюционировать и работать более эффективно, позволяя перенаправлять ресурсы на другие энергоемкие процессы, которые необходимы для выполнения сложных когнитивных задач.
