Что такое живые ископаемые
Давно известно, что некоторые организмы имеют очень низкое видовое разнообразие и при этом физически незначительно отличаются от древних предков. Поэтому в 1859 году Дарвин ввел термин “живые ископаемые”. Как не сложно догадаться, этот термин относится к существам, которые являются ископаемыми, то есть жившими десятки или сотни миллионов лет назад, и которые живут по сей день. Однако до последнего момента четкого доказательства существования живых ископаемых не существовало.
Чтобы выяснить, существуют ли такие виды, группа американских и китайских ученых провела исследование, в котором был использован компьютерный анализ последовательностей генов у видов, которые считались живыми ископаемыми. При помощи такого анализа авторы определяли сколько генов у них сохранилось от общих предков. Таким образом они выявили скорость замены (мутации) генов с течением времени. В общей сложности они исследовали 1105 кодирующих областей ДНК почти 500 различных видов челюстных позвоночных.

Латимерия не является живым ископаемым
Исследование показало, что некоторые существа, которые ранее считались живыми ископаемыми, на самом деле такими не являются. Например, это касается таких видов как туатара (Sphenodon punctatus), латимерия (Latimeria chalumnae), гоацин (Oisthocomus hoazin). Все они сильно отличаются от своих ископаемых родственников, то есть сильно эволюционировали, как вышеупомянутые мечехвосты и щитни. Хотя многие общие характеристики у них действительно сохранились. Напомним, что по мнению ученых, латимерия выглядит так же, как древние рыбы, которые начали выходить на сушу 360 миллионов лет назад.
Живые древние рыбы
При том, что большая часть видов не оказались “живыми ископаемыми”, некоторые виды развивались очень медленно, в результате чего, как уже было сказано выше, не сильно отличаются от своих предков. Речь идет о рыбах — щуках и родственных им осетровых. Скорость их эволюции, по мнению ученых, в три раза ниже, чем у других видов позвоночных. Например, исследование показало, что ДНК панцирных щук практически не отличается от ДНК предков, которые жили более 100 миллионов лет назад.

Панцирник длиннорылый — настоящее живое ископаемое
Надо сказать, что показателем того, что вид минимально изменился, является способность различных его представителей давать гибридное потомство. Например, лошади и ослы могут скрещиваться и давать потомство, известное как мулы. Однако гибриды получаются бесплодными. Последний же общий предок лошади и осла жил 4 миллиона лет назад.
Как сообщается в исследовании, опубликованном в журнале Evolution, миссисипский панцирник (Atractosteus spatula) и панцирник длиннорылый (Lepisosteus osseus) настолько медленно эволюционировали, что способны скрещиваться и давать гибридное потомство. Причем, в отличие от лошадей и ослов, их потомство не бесплодное. Разделение же между этими видами произошло примерно 105 миллионов лет назад. Складывается впечатление, что эволюция этих рыб практически остановилась.
