В 2016 году аэрокосмическое агентство NASA отправило в космос исследовательскую станцию OSIRIS-REx. Согласно плану, аппарат должен был долететь до астероида Бенну, собрать при помощи специального манипулятора грунт с его поверхности и доставить этот материал на Землю. Все прошло практически идеально — спустя семь лет работы, в сентябре 2023 года, станция пролетела мимо нашей планеты, выбросив капсулу с собранным грунтом на пустынный участок в американском штате Юта. Эта емкость была подобрана людьми в защитных костюмах и перевезена в стерильную комнату, чтобы грунт не был загрязнен частицами земного происхождения. Недавно специалисты наконец-то показали грунт публике во время прямой трансляции. Как оказалось, внутри капсулы ученых ждал большой сюрприз.

ВАЖНО: после доставки образцов Бенну на Землю, аппарат OSIRIS-REx не перестал работать — сейчас он летит к астероиду Апофис. Ожидается, что он достигнет точки назначения в 2029 году.

Образцы грунта астероида Бенну были показаны публике 11 октября 2023 года. По плану, космический аппарат OSIRIS-REx должен был собрать 60 граммов грунта. Многим людям такое количество материала может показаться очень маленьким, но ученым этого более чем достаточно. По данным издания IFL Science, такая масса добытого материала могла бы обеспечить исследователей работой на несколько лет вперед. Для сравнения, в 2020 году аппарат «Хаябуса-2» доставил на Землю 5,4 грамма образцов астероида Рюгу, и они были изучены в ходе тысяч научных работ.

Момент извлечения грунта с астероида Бенну космической станцией OSIRIS-REx
Когда ученые вскрыли привезенную аппаратом OSIRIS-REx капсулу, их ждал большой сюрприз — оказалось, что станция собрала около 400 граммов грунта, значительно больше, чем ожидалось. Планировалось, что 30% добытых образцов будут разделены между двумя сотнями ученых, которые будут изучать их на протяжении двух последующих лет. Остальную часть ученые планировали использовать для решения вопросов, которые могут возникнуть в будущем — в общем, ее хотели оставить про запас. Благодаря наличию большего количества образцов, ученым будет гораздо проще разделить их между собой.

Предварительный анализ образцов грунта показал, что в нем содержится углерод и значительное количество воды. Разумеется, жидкость имеется не в чистом виде — частицы находятся внутри глинистых минералов вроде серпентина. Также в образцах обнаружились сульфиды и магнетит. На данный момент сказать точно, о чем говорит наличие этих элементов в грунте с поверхности астероида Бенну, невозможно.
