После трех неудачных попыток марсоход НАСА “Кьюриосити” наконец достиг марсианского хребта Гедиз Валлис. Ранее не удавалось этого сделать из-за острых скал и очень крутых склонов, то есть ровер просто не мог преодолеть препятствия. Но 14 августа, после самого сложного восхождения за всю историю миссии, “Кьюриосити” все же прибыл на место, которое ученые надеялись исследовать уже не первый год. Интерес к хребту связан с тем, что он представляет собой остаток мощных древних селевых потоков, которые здесь существовали три миллиарда лет назад, когда на Красной планете была атмосфера и обилие воды. Эти потоки несли по склону горы грязь и валуны, поэтому Гедиз Валлис хранит информацию о том, что происходило на Красной планеты миллиарды лет назад.

Геологическая капсула времени на Марсе
Как сообщают исследователи, за три года марсоходу удалось проложить безопасный маршрут к хребту Гедиз Валлис. Как мы рассказывали ранее, до этого он постоянно сталкивался с трудностями. Преодолев их, он в конечном итоге смог изучить местность и валуны, которые были сюда перенесены селевыми потоками с вершины горы Шарп, высота которой превышает 5 км. Хребет дает уникальную возможность изучить породы с тех участков, которые марсоход никогда не сможет посетить.
С 2014 года до настоящего момента Curiosity исследует лишь подножие горы Шарп. По пути он обнаружил следы существования озер и ручьев.
Надо сказать, что разные слои горы Шарп содержат информацию о разных эпохах марсианской истории. Поэтому по мере восхождения ровера на гору, ученые узнают какие изменения претерпевал ландшафт Марса с течением времени.

Как поясняют исследователи, Хребет Гедиз Валлис стал одним из последних образований горы в период водного прошлого планеты. Ученые называют его «капсулой времени», самым молодым геологическим объектом. Поэтому ее исследование имеет большое значение для науки.

Благодаря прибытию ровера к хребту, ученые впервые вблизи смогли увидеть так называемый веер селевого потока, то есть размытые остатки геологического объекта. Селевыми потоками, или селями называется мощный русловой поток, состоящий из воды с грязью и обломками горных пород, который внезапно возникает в бассейнах небольших горных рек.
Когда селевые потоки переносили обломки валунов и грязь, они распространялись в форме веера. Подобные веерообразные селевые потоки существуют и на нашей планете, но они плохо изучены, в частности, ученых интересует как они формируются. Поэтому результаты исследований позволят не только получить новую информацию о Марсе, но также улучшить понимание возникновения селевых потоков на Земле, где они представляют стихийную опасность, о чем сообщает SciTechDaily.

По мнению исследователей, селевые потоки на горе Шарп были очень мощными. Они буквально вырывали огромные камни на верху горы и переносили их вниз по склону. Некоторые обломки имеют размер с автомобиль. Сложно себе представить, насколько мощной была эта стихия. Собственно говоря, потоками селей и был сформирован хребет Гедиз Валлис.
“Я не могу себе представить, каково было бы стать свидетелем этих событий” — говорит геолог Уильям Дитрих, сотрудник Калифорнийского университета в Беркли и один из авторов исследования.

В течение нескольких дней марсоход сделал 136 фотографий на хребте Гедиз Валлис, которые впоследствии были объединены в единую панораму, обеспечивающую 360-градусный обзор. Ознакомиться с ними можно в видео выше (менять обзор прямо в видео можно при помощи курсора). На этой панораме виден путь, по которому «Кьюриосити» шел по склону горы, преодолев «Долину Маркерной ленты», где ранее удалось обнаружить свидетельства существования древнего озера.

Кроме того, для исследования была задействована роботизированная рука Curiosity. В общей сложности ровер провел на хребте 11 дней, изучая состав грунта и делая снимки. Пока исследователи изучают полученные данные, Кьюриосити уже приступил к выполнению новой задачи — занялся поиском пути к каналу над хребтом, который поможет ученым понять как вода текла по горе Шарп.
