Спустя меньше недели он смог сделать одно открытие, а именно — в районе Южного полюса обнаружил в большом количестве важный элемент. По мнению ученых, его обнаружение может стать ключом к созданию инфраструктуры на Луне, так как решит вопрос электроэнергией. Кроме того, данный элемент может рассказать ученым о том, что происходило со спутником ранее, то есть несколько миллиардов лет назад. Как сообщило космическое агентство Индии (ISRO), луноход Прагъян обнаружил серу вблизи южного полюса Луны. Эта находка намекает не только на существование атмосферных условий, как было сказано выше, но и прошлую вулканическую активность спутника Земли. Как мы рассказывали в статье о загадочных слоях под поверхностью Луны, в последнее время ученые находят все больше подтверждений тому, что на поверхности спутника несколько миллиардов лет назад активно извергались вулканы.
Сомнений в том, что Прагьян обнаружил серу в лунном грунте, быть не может. Аппарат оборудован инструментом химического анализа. Таким же устройством оснащены марсоходы Кьюриосити и Журонг, которые изучают поверхность Красной планета. Принцип работы химического анализатора довольно простой — он направляет лазер на почву и превращает ее частицы в шлейф плазмы. По частоте волны света определяются вещества, которые содержит грунт. В частности, по уникальной длине волны, химический анализатор обнаружил серу.
Кроме серы, Прагян также выявил в лунном грунте и другие элементы, такие как алюминий, кальций, хром, железо, марганец, кислород, кремний и титан. По мнению ученых, состав грунта поможет понять геологическую эволюцию Луны.

Надо сказать, что само по себе наличие серы на поверхности Луны не является для ученых неожиданностью. Недавнее исследование лунных камней, доставленных на Землю в рамках миссий Аполлон в начале 1970-х годов, также показало наличие серы. Однако они были добыты вблизи экватора Луны. Поэтому до последнего момента было неизвестно, есть ли сера на лунном полюсе.
Надо сказать, что на орбите Луны уже давно работают несколько исследовательских аппаратов. Однако приборы, которыми они оснащены, не могут выполнить точный анализ лунного грунта.

В чем польза находки индийского лунохода
Как мы рассказывали ранее, южный полюс Луны был выбран для посадки Чандраян-3 не просто так. Предположительно здесь имеются запасы воды, правда, не в чистом виде. Если это действительно так, запасы помогут в создании на спутнике будущих баз. Однако базы нужно обеспечить не только водой и кислородом, но и электричеством. Именно в этом и может помочь сера.
Предыдущие исследования показали, что астрономы могут использовать лунную серу в аккумуляторных батареях. Кроме того, она может пригодиться и как строительный материал. Причем ее можно использовать даже в жидком виде при строительстве баз и инфраструктуры. Сера плавится при температуре 113 градусов, что лишь немного выше дневной температуры на Луне, которая составляет 106 градусов, но иногда она может повышаться свыше 120 градусов.

Теперь луноходу осталось выполнить самое главное, то, ради чего он и был отправлен на поверхность спутника — обнаружить водород. Это вещество сможет обеспечить космонавтов двумя важнейшими ресурсами — водой и ракетным топливом. В настоящее время луноход находится примерно посередине своего лунного жизненного цикла, который составляет две недели. Правда, еще есть надежда, что он сможет пережить лунную ночь, и тогда его миссия продлится.

Но, в любом случае, еще есть время, чтобы обнаружить водород. Если же найти его не удастся, ученым придется работать над технологиями, которые позволят добывать воду из лунного грунта.
