Ученые на протяжении многих лет пытаются выяснить каким был климат на Красной планете. Существует мнение, что в период, когда на Марсе существовала атмосфера, он был теплым и влажным, похожим на Землю, так как существовал парниковый эффект. Соответственно, были условия для зарождения жизни. Но если предположить, что планеты была скована льдом, то вероятность возникновения жизни близится к нулю.
Чтобы выяснить, каким был климат на самом деле, в новом исследовании ученые рассмотрели два климатических сценария раннего Марса, и сравнили полученные результаты с существующими особенностями дренажа воды и эрозией грунта. При составлении модели они использовали различные известные данные, включая модель атмосферной циркуляции.

Ученые создали две климатические модели Марса — теплую и холодную
В одном сценарии Марс рассматривался как теплая и влажная планета со средней температурой около 10 градусов, а в другом – как холодная и ледяная планета со средней температурой -48 градусов.
На Марсе было холодно как в Антарктиде
В результате исследования авторы обнаружили, что холодный сценарий более вероятный, чем теплый. Холодная модель лучше справилась с объяснением особенностей водной эрозии, которые остались на поверхности Марса, и которые озадачивали ученых на протяжении последних 50 лет. Об этом исследователи сообщают в издании Geophysical Research Planets.
Кроме того, холодный сценарий больше соответствует тем данным, которые известны об истории Солнца и наклоне оси Красной планеты 3-4 миллиарда лет назад. По мнению ученых, холодный сценарий действительно более вероятный, так как Марс получал только 43 процента солнечной энергии от того количества, которое получает Земля. Кроме того, считается, что молодое Солнце излучало на 25% меньше энергии, чем сейчас.

Марс, скорее всего, всегда был очень холодным
Чрезвычайный наклон марсианской оси мог направить полюса планеты к Солнцу и отодвинуть полярные льды к экватору, где сегодня наблюдаются следы дренажа и эрозия. Что еще более важно, из-за плотной атмосферы, экваториальные высокогорные регионы были холоднее, а северные равнинные регионы — теплее. То есть существовал эффект ледяного высокогорья, из-за которого на Земле горные вершины покрыты снегом.
Таким образом, несмотря на наличие плотной атмосферы, наполненной углекислым газом, обладающим парниковым эффектом, Марс все равно оставался холодной планетой. Температура здесь была примерно такая же, как в Антарктиде на Земле.

На Марсе существовали периоды, когда вода была жидкой
Однако из данных, полученных с марсоходов и орбитальных аппаратов, мы знаем, что на древнем Марсе существовали озера. А значит, что-то должно было растопить лед, образовавший долины. Можно предположить, что на Марсе были кратковременные события, которые приводили к повышению температуры. Такими событиями могли быть извержения вулканов или, например, падения метеоритов.
Пока это только предположения, поэтому ученым предстоит провести дополнительные исследования, а также ответить на многие вопросы, например, как долго длились периоды, когда вода была жидкой. Также до конца неясно, действительно ли теплые периоды были короткими и эпизодическими или они могли длиться долго. Напомним, что согласно другим исследованиям, жидкая вода на Марсе не просто присутствовала, а могла существовать на 1 млрд. лет дольше, чем предполагают ученые.
