В рамках миссии USSF-52 11 декабря должен был состояться запуск на орбиту секретного космического корабля X-37B, однако из-за непогоды он был перенесен на 13 сентября 4:14 по московскому времени. Главный заказчик полета — Космические Силы США, поэтому цель полета и все, что с ним связано, находится под секретом. Согласно официальной версии, космические силы будут изучать воздействие радиации на семена растений и другие материалы, предоставленные НАСА. Однако не все специалисты поверили в это объяснение. Вполне возможно, что полет связан с военными целями. Более того, даже предназначение космического корабля X-37B и до конца тоже неизвестно.

Специалисты заметили много странностей, связанных с предстоящей миссией. Использование очень мощной ракеты является лишь одной из них. В частности, ряд экспертов обратили внимание на то, что предполагаемая орбита запуска корабля будет нетипичной для него. Ее использование является нелогичной и не экономичной.
Высота перигея (расстояние до ближайшей к Земле точки орбиты) будет составлять 185 километров, апогея (самой отдаленной от Земли точки) — 35188 километров. Но специалистов смущает или даже приводит в недоумение наклонение плоскости орбиты, равное 48 градусам. Если в дальнейшем корабль будет переведен на геостационарную орбиту, то есть круговую орбиту над экватором, то гораздо целесообразнее было бы выводить челнок на орбиту с наклонением 28 градусов, которая вполне доступна для точки старта корабля.
Согласно одной из самых распространенных версий, X-37B выполняет задачи, связанные с разведкой. Кроме того, Хизер Уилсон, бывший министр ВВС США, ранее заявляла, что космический корабль X-37B также может поворачиваться и менять свой курс, когда находится на низкой высоте. Таким образом она намекала на то, что аппарат можно использовать для вмешательства в дела противников. Но, каким образом, разумеется, остается бывший министр не сказала.
