Дело в том, что большую часть времени он проводит вовсе не возле звезды. А еще Меркурий является самой близкой планетой к любой другой планете солнечной системы (некоторые планеты подходят ближе друг к другу, но моментально расходятся). Но на этом удивительные факты о нем не заканчиваются. Еще в середине 70-х годов миссия НАСА “Маринер-10” зафиксировал следы того, что планета уменьшается. Впоследствии ученые не только подтвердили эту информацию и даже удалось подсчитать насколько планета уменьшилась. Однако до последнего момента было неясно, продолжается ли этот процесс или прекратился миллиарды лет назад.

Как возникают уступы на поверхности Меркурия
Меркурий не представляет такого интереса для ученых, как, например, Марс, так как условия на его поверхности гораздо более экстремальные. Кроме того, что отсутствует атмосфера, температура здесь достигает 430°C, а световой день длится 59 земных дня. Тем не менее, некоторые особенности этой планеты заставляют ученых уделить ей внимание. К таким особенностям относится ее сжатие.
Надо сказать, что ученым давно известно, что планета сжималась на протяжении миллиардов лет. Еще в 1974 году аппарат Mariner 10, пролетая мимо Меркурия, снял огромные уступы высотой более километра, которые тянутся по поверхности планеты на сотни километров. В 2011-2015 годах аппарат NASA “Мессенджер” обнаружил, что лопастые уступы находятся во всех частях планеты. Напомним, что уступы представляют собой ступенеобразные углубления.
По мнению ученых, обнаруженные уступы являются следствием сжатия планеты изнутри. Когда размер внутренней части планеты уменьшается, на поверхности становится слишком много коры, в результате чего ей приходится уменьшать свою площадь. Происходит это путем надвига одного участка коры на другой, то есть один участок местности выталкивается за прилегающую местность. В результате уступы являются своего рода “морщинами”, подобными тем, которые появляются на подсыхающем яблоке.
Уменьшающиеся из-за уступов кратеры свидетельствуют о сжатии планеты
Еще в 2014 году при помощи ударных кратеров ученые обнаружили, что возраст уступов составляет около 3 миллиардов лет. Метод датирования достаточно простой — чем выше плотность ударных кратеров, тем, соответственно, выше возраст поверхности уступов. Также ученые выяснили, что планета уменьшилась в диаметре на 7 км.
Почему Меркурий уменьшается в размере
В самом начале статьи мы не зря сказали, что Меркурий можно считать ближайшей к Земле планетой. В результате того, что он отдаляется от Солнца на приличные расстояния, его внутренняя часть остывает из-за утечек тепла. К слову, остывают недра не только Меркурия, но и нашей планеты. Причем это происходит быстрее, чем ранее предполагали ученые. Можно даже предположить, что с этими процессами связано ослабление магнитного поля нашей планеты.
Как известно, вещества при охлаждении уменьшаются в объеме (за исключением воды, которая при замерзании, наоборот, увеличивается). С этими процессами внутри Меркурия и связано его сжатие.
Лопастные уступы на поверхности Меркурия
Меркурий продолжает сжиматься
В недавнем исследовании, опубликованном в журнале Nature Geoscience, ученые обнаружили, что уступы продолжают движение, несмотря на то, что образовались миллиарды лет назад. Об этом говорят небольшие трещины, которые тянутся вдоль углублений. На Земле такие трещины возникают когда кора растягивается. Но как они могли появиться на поверхности Меркурия, кора которого, наоборот, сжимается?
По мнению исследователей, трещины возникли в результате изгиба напорного участка коры. Например, если вы возьмете пластиковую линейку и начнете давить ее торцом в стену, она будет сгибаться до тех пор, пока в какой-то момент не треснет. То же самое происходит и с корой уменьшающегося в объеме Меркурия.
Уступ с трещинами (грабенами) на гребне
Согласно данным исследования, трещины имеют ширину менее 1 км и глубину не более 100 метров. Это говорит о том, что они появились недавно, в противном случае за миллиарды лет от них не осталось бы и следа. Предположительно, возраст трещин, или грабенов, как их назвали ученые, составляет не более 300 миллионов лет, что является совсем небольшим возрастом в геологическом масштабе Меркурия.
