Влияние потери веса на организм кошек учеными хорошо изучено, а вот противоположному процессу внимания уделялось мало. Поэтому сотрудники Университета Иллинойса Урбана-Шампейн (UIUC) решили выяснить к каким последствиям может привести увеличение веса вследствие переедания. К слову, эта проблема весьма распространенная — согласно официальным данным, в США более половины кошек имеют лишний вес.
Свое внимание команда сконцентрировала на желудочно-кишечных и метаболических изменениях животных, которые возникают при переедании и ожирении. В своем исследовании они наблюдали за 11 худыми кошками. Как сообщается, все они были стерилизованы взрослыми самками.
В ходе исследования авторы работы кормили их обычно кошачьей едой, которая доступна в магазинах. Однако диета была сбалансированной и дозированной. Спустя две недели ученые исследовали состояние здоровья животных. Для этого они брали анализы крови и фекалий, а также сравнивали показатели физической активности, которую измеряли при помощи датчиков, закрепленных на ошейниках животных.

Спустя 18 недель такой диеты, авторы работы еще раз исследовали состояния их здоровья и сравнили с предыдущими показателями.
Ученые предполагали, что у кошек с ожирением снизится физическая активность. Однако изменений активности они не обнаружили, а точнее, активность варьировалась от кошки к кошке. Но вместо этого исследователи заметили ухудшение здоровья.
Почему кошкам вредно переедать
По мере того, как уровень жира в организме повышался, способность переваривать питательные вещества у кошек уменьшалась. Анализы подтвердили, что пища не переваривалась эффективно. В частности, у них был низкий pH фекалий. У людей это говорит о плохом усвоении углеводов и жиров. О таких результатах исследователи сообщают в журнале Journal of Animal Science.

Как сообщают авторы работы, когда организм получает меньше пищи, он эффективно усваивает питательные вещества. Когда организм получает много пищи, она быстрее проходит через пищеварительную систему. Поэтому организм потребляет меньше питательных веществ.
Кроме того, ученые заметили, что у животных произошли изменения микробиома кишечника. Время желудочно-кишечного транзита, то есть от приема пищи до выведения продуктов жизнедеятельности, сократилось на 25%. То есть кошки чаще начали испражняться, и это, очевидно, стало причиной изменения микрофлоры. Как известно, последняя влияет на самые разные процессы в организме. Например, у людей микрофлора становится причиной снижения физической активности и появления хронической усталости.
Изучение метаболических процессов и изменений в желудочно-кишечном тракте, по мнению ученых, поможет предотвратить или вылечить ожирение у кошек. Однако в будущих исследованиях ученые хотят еще выяснить, как именно изменение микробиоты влияет на здоровье кошек.
