Большие собаки быстрее “изнашиваются генетически”
Ученые пока не знают точно, почему большие собаки живут мало, однако имеют несколько версий на этот счет. Согласно одной из них, большим собакам приходится сильно расти. Дело в том, что щенки, когда рождаются, лишь незначительно отличаются друг от друга размерами. Щенок большой породы может быть крупнее щенка мелкой породы в полтора-два раза. Но когда щенки вырастают, разница в росте между ними может увеличиться во много раз.
Это значит, что клеткам крупных собак приходится чаще делиться. По мере деления, защитные участки ДНК на концах хромосом, известные еще как теломеры, становятся короче. В результате клетки накапливают ошибки ДНК, а также вырабатывают больше окислительных молекул, которые способны повредить ДНК. Проще говоря, крупные собаки быстрее “генетически изнашиваются”. Это значит, что они быстрее стареют и у них повышен риск развития тех или иных заболеваний. Например, исследования показали, что у крупных собак раньше развивается катаракта.
Самая крупная собака, которая была занесена в книгу рекордов Гиннеса, умерла в возрасте 3 лет от рака кости.
Также у крупных собак часто развивается рак кости на ногах. Это коррелирует с исследованиями ученых, касающихся людей. Как мы уже рассказывали ранее, у высоких мужчин и женщин увеличен риск развития всех видов рака. Предположительно, это связано с теми же причинами — клетки накапливают повреждения по мере деления. Почему же тогда у больших животных, например, китов и слонов нет такой проблемы? Скорее всего, они становились большими постепенно, и в ходе эволюции их организм успел адаптироваться к большому размеру тела.
