Несмотря на то, что во сне мы проводим около трети жизни, то есть почти 22 года (при продолжительности жизни 70 лет), мы забываем большинство снов. Что удивительно, ведь сновидения наполняют наш разум во время сна и остаются одним из самых захватывающих и загадочных аспектов человеческого познания. Начиная с психоаналитических интерпретаций Фрейда и заканчивая поисками биологических объяснений современной наукой, понимание сновидений по-прежнему остается сложной задачей и ставит исследователей в тупик. При этом один из самых загадочных вопросов заключается в том, почему мы забываем большинство сновидений почти сразу после пробуждения. В 2019 году ученым, все же, удалось ответить на этот вопрос – оказалось, что во время фазы быстрого сна наша способность создавать воспоминания нарушается, из-за чего мы склонны запоминать только самые последние сновидения.

Фазы сна
Прежде чем разбираться в причинах, по которых мы забываем большинство сновидений после пробуждения, важно оценить сложность самого процесса – сна, который, как известно, протекает в несколько этапов. Исследователи выделяют две основные фазы сна — медленную (NREM — non-rapid eye movement) и быструю (REM — rapid eye movement).
Медленная фаза занимает около 75% от всего времени сна и делится на три стадии — N1, N2 и N3. N1 — это промежуточная стадия между засыпанием и бодрствованием, так называемый поверхностный сон. Вторая, быстрая фаза, занимает около 20-25% от всего времени сна и наступает примерно через полтора часа после засыпания. Интересно, что REM-фаза повторяется каждые полтора часа и становится длиннее под утро. Именно в этот момент мы и видим сны.

Фаза REM или фаза быстрого движения глаз характеризуется высокой мозговой активностью и напоминает ту, что наблюдается во время бодрствования. Считается, в ходе этой фазы сон играет важную роль в обучении, консолидации памяти и регуляции настроения. Следовательно, сны могут быть побочными эффектами этих когнитивных процессов. Тем не менее, мимолетная природа этих ночных видений и их быстрое исчезновение после пробуждения – феномен, который продолжает озадачивать ученых.

Почему мы забываем сны?
Одна из ведущих теорий, объясняющих амнезию после пробуждения, вращается вокруг химии мозга: во время фазы быстрого сна уровень нейромедиатора ацетилхолина довольно высокий, что способствует мозговой активности, связанной со сновидениями. При этом уровень норадреналина – нейромедиатора, связанного с укреплением памяти, находится на самом низком уровне.
Снижение уровня норадреналина во время фазы быстрого сна может быть ключевым фактором, объясняющим причину, по которой мы забываем сны. Все потому, что из-за небольшого количества норадреналина мозг не может эффективно переносить впечатления от сновидений из краткосрочной памяти в долгосрочную. Именно к таким выводам пришли авторы работы 2019 года, опубликованной в журнале Science.

Зачем мозг «удаляет» сны из памяти?
Не менее интересна в причинах утреннего забвения и роль префронтальной коры – области мозга, связанной с формированием памяти и сложных мыслительных процессов, которая во время фазы быстрого сна менее активна.
