Подъезды в советских многоэтажных домах имели одинаковый, довольно странный дизайн, который наверняка всем знаком — это ступеньки, окрашенные только по краям, и стены, окрашенные до половины. Такие подъезды можно встретить и сейчас во многих домах советских времен постройки. Конечно, можно предположить, что, как в СССР, так и сейчас при ремонте подъездов просто экономят краску, и отчасти это будет правдой. Но зачем в таком случае вообще красить края ступенек? Жилищный кризис в СССР возник за долго до Великой Отечественной войны, а после ее окончания он усилился еще больше. Советские люди часто жили в коммунальных квартирах в бараках. Конечно, коммунальные квартиры были гораздо лучше, чем, например, современные квартиры-гробы в Гонконге. Тем не менее советскому руководству необходимо было быстро решать проблему.
В 1955 году Хрущев поехал с визитом в Белград, где увидел строительство простых и дешевых блочных домов. Идея ему понравилась, и уже в 1957 году в СССР начали строить аналогичные здания, правда, с некоторыми изменениями — архитекторам было поручено отказаться от высоких потолков, широких окон, больших коридоров и прочих «архитектурных излишествах». Поэтому максимально удешевленные дома с уменьшенными в размерах квартирами в народе прозвали “хрущевками”.

Главное преимущество «хрущевок» заключалось в скорости постройки. Кирпичные блоки для них производили на специальных домостроительных комбинатах. На строительство одного дома из таких блоков отводилось всего 12 дней, однако были случаи, когда их возводили даже за 5 дней.
О высокой скорости строительства трубили все советские газеты. Однако, как не сложно догадаться, о высоком качестве говорить не приходилось. В связи с этим советским дизайнерам нужно было идти на всевозможные ухищрения, чтобы скрыть огрехи строителей. Собственно говоря, с этим и был связан странный дизайн подъездов. Но, как уже было сказано выше, это не единственная причина.

Малярам и штукатурам приходилось работать в таком же быстром темпе, как и всем остальным строителям. Поэтому такой мелочью, как выравнивание стен, никто не заморачивался. Оштукатуривание осуществлялось “на глаз” при помощи шпателя, и без всяких вспомогательных инструментов вроде строительного уровня и маяков. Поэтому стены были неровными, что особенно сильно бросалось в глаза на месте стыка с лестницей.

Контрастные полосы краски визуально скрывали этот недостаток или, по крайней мере, делали его менее заметный. Кроме того, после штукатуров работали маляры. Времени на аккуратное выполнение своей работы у них тоже не было. Капли краски во время окрашивания перил и стен обязательно падали на лестницу. Поэтому окрашивание краев ступенек той же краской, то и стены, позволяло скрыть неаккуратную работу, и не тратить время на оттирание краски от бетона.
Но и это еще не все. Бетонные ступеньки имеют шершавое покрытие, что усложняет уборку подъезда. Особенно сложно выметать мусор с шершавой поверхности на участках стыков со стеной, где больше всего скапливается пыль и грязь. Окрашенный же участок более гладкий, по нему легко скользит веник, и это значительно упрощает задачу уборщикам.
Правда, теперь сложно сказать, действительно ли во время строительства “хрущевок” думали об удобстве уборки подъездов, но это отчасти объясняет, почему края ступенек продолжают красить до сих пор. Да и выглядит такая лестница гораздо опрятнее и наряднее, чем вообще не окрашенная.

Почему лестницы не красили полностью, догадаться несложно — в этом случае они были бы гораздо более травмоопасными, то есть краска сделала бы их скользкими. Кроме того, это значительно увеличило бы расходы на отделочные работы и последующие ремонты подъездов.
Также существует еще одна версия, которая не имеет подтверждений, но выглядит вполне правдоподобно. Возможно, вы замечали, что лестницы по краям имитирует ковровую дорожку. В советские времена, как известно, любили и очень ценили ковры. Поэтому «ковровая дорожка» в подъезде была признаком хорошей и богатой жизни.
