Ранее мы рассказывали, что афтершоки могут продолжаться от нескольких дней до нескольких лет. Но, судя по всему, на самом деле они могут продолжаться веками. К такому выводу пришли ученые, проанализировав землетрясения в центральной и восточной части США, а также части восточной Канады.
Некоторые ученые давно уже считали, что нынешние землетрясения в этих регионах являются долгоживущими афтершоками, то есть отголосками землетрясений, произошедших на границе Миссури и Кентукки между 1811 и 1812 годами, а также землетрясения, которое произошло в Чарльстоне в 1886 году. Другие же предполагают, что землетрясения представляют собой фоновую сейсмичность, сосредоточенную в слабых зонах литосферы.

Землетрясение в Чарльстоне в 1886 году привело к множественным разрушениям и гибели 60 человек
Отличить один тип землетрясений от другого не так-то просто. Чтобы сделать это, авторы работы изучили основные характеристики сейсмической активности. Основной характеристикой был так называемый “метод NN”, который подразумевает расчет расстояния между парами землетрясений в пространственно-временной области. Если расстояния ближе, чем можно прогнозировать для фоновой сейсмической активности, значит землетрясение является афтершоком.
Таким образом команда изучила сейсмическую активность, которая была зафиксирована близко к эпицентрам древних землетрясений. Как сообщается в исследовании Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, сейсмическая активность, которую они зафиксировали, по всем параметрам соответствуют афтершокам.
После афтершоков может произойти сильное землетрясение?
Как сообщается в исследовании, не все описанные землетрясения были афтершоками. События, произошедшие в 1811 и 1812 годах, являются причиной только около 23 процентов землетрясений, произошедших в сейсмической зоне Новый Мадрид в период с 1980 по 2016 год. В эту зону входят штаты Миссури, Арканзас, Теннесси, Кентукки и Иллинойс. Магнитуда всех землетрясений в этой зоне составляла более 2,6 баллов.

Более 20% землетрясений в Новом Мадриде оказались афтершоками
В Южной Каролине исследователи связали до 72 процентов современных землетрясений с событием, которое произошло в Чарльстоне в 1886 году. Его интенсивность составляла около 7 баллов. Оно привело к множественным разрушениям и привело к гибели порядка 60 человек.

Например, геофизик Сьюзан Хаф, участник программы по опасным землетрясениям Геологической службы США, считает, что распределение землетрясений по ландшафту может быть вызвано другими явлениями. Например, это может быть связано с устойчивым движением плит вдоль разлома, которое называется ползучестью.
