Однако недавно ученым удалось совершить настоящее открытие — на территории Канады обнаружена окаменелость возрастом около 350 миллионов лет, в которой отчетливо видна трехмерная форма кроны. Сложно себе представить, что когда-то на Земле существовал мир, в котором не было деревьев. Например, 420 миллионов лет назад самыми высокими объектами были прототакситы — странные организмы в виде конусов. Первые леса начали появляться несколько позже, однако информации о них и деревьях не так много, так как условия, позволяющие дереву окаменеть вместе с кроной, возникали крайне редко.
Как сообщают ученые, дереву, обнаруженному в Канаде, удалось сохраниться полностью благодаря катастрофе. Оно произрастало на на берегу рифтового озера, пока из-за мощного землетрясения не оказалось погребенным под слоем ила. Первое ископаемое дерево этого вида было обнаружено в провинции Нью-Брансуик около семи лет назад во время работ в карьере. В течение последующих нескольких лет удалось найти еще четыре экземпляра того же самого вида. Они находились недалеко от первого дерева, что говорит о том, что растения росли группами рядом друг с другом.

Трехмерная модель древнего дерева Sanfordiacaulis
Один из экземпляров сохранился вместе с листьями, что сделало его абсолютно уникальной находкой. Как сообщают ученые, дерево Sanfordiacaulis имело 250 чрезвычайно длинных листьев вокруг своего веретенообразного короткого ствола. Своим внешним видом оно напоминает папоротник или пальму, однако имеет некоторые отличия. Если у пальмы все листья сконцентрированы в самом верху и их немного, то у древнего дерева листьев гораздо больше, и они расположены вдоль ствола. Отметим, что пальмы на Земле появились на 50 миллионов лет позже.
Листья Sanfordiacaulis простираются от ствола в среднем на 1,75 метра. По оценкам исследователей, каждый лист дерева вырастал минимум на один метр, прежде чем опадал. Диаметр кроны составлял 5,5 метра вокруг ствола. Сам ствол имел диаметр 16 сантиметров. Об этом исследователи сообщают в журнале Current Biology.
Окаменелость, о которой сообщают ученые, уникальна, то есть дерево имеет необычную форму. В настоящее время подобных деревьев не существует. По мнению исследователей — это был один из “экспериментов эволюции”, когда на Земле существовало богатое биоразнообразие. Похоже, такой тип деревьев оказался не самым практичным, поэтому в конечном итоге они исчезли.

Почему древнее дерево имеет необычную форму
Результаты исследования дают важную информацию об эволюции растений, и особенно деревьев, которые достигают в высоту более четырех метров. Кроме того, работа дает понять, что в истории развития жизни на Земле существовали деревья, которые не похожи ни на одно из современных растений. Причем некоторые выглядели так, как будто они являются плодом воображения писателей-фантастов, описывающих другие миры.
Исследователи предполагают, что необычная форма дерева связана с его условиями произрастания. Так как оно находилось под высокими деревьями, широкая крона с большими листьями позволяла получить больше солнечного света. Следует также отметить, что Sanfordiacaulis является самым ранним свидетельством того, что миллионы лет назад низкие деревья росли в лесу под высокими деревьями.
