После себя он оставил 180-километровый кратер Чикшулуб, который находится на мексиканском полуострове Юкатан. Ученые считают, что древняя катастрофа сильно изменила географию полуострова, поэтому он и его окрестности сильно отличаются от других частей нашей планеты. Например, там очень много сенотов — провалов, образованных при обрушении сводов известняковых пещер. Во время экспедиций ученые открыли в этих углублениях много уникальных видов животных. Также недалеко от Юкатана, в заливе Четумаль, есть самая глубокая голубая дыра в мире. Ученые все еще не могут понять, насколько она глубока, поэтому на данный момент ее называют «бездонной».

Что такое голубая дыра
Голубая дыра — это термин, обозначающий очень глубокую подводную пещеру или просто вертикальное углубление. Чаще всего голубые дыры представляют собой наполненные водой воронки, находящиеся ниже уровня моря. Это название появилось потому, что сверху углубления похожи на темно-голубые пятна вокруг светлой воды. Хотя было бы логичнее, если эти углубления назывались «синими дырами».

Драконья дыра в Южно-Китайском море
Одна из самых глубоких голубых дыр находится на территории Южно-Китайского моря. Она известна как Драконья дыра, но иногда ее называют Голубой дырой Юнлэ в честь третьего императора китайской династии Мин. Согласно результатам научных исследований, глубина Драконьей дыры составляет 300 метров. При этом диаметр дыры у поверхности равен 130 метрам, а внизу ширина меняется.

Впервые голубая дыра Таам Джа была обнаружена в 2003 году, когда житель Юкатана поплыл за заплывшей ему в рот рыбой. Ученые долго не измеряли глубину этой дыры с диаметром 150 метров. Но потом при помощи современных технологий они попытались это сделать и выяснили, что ее дна достигнуть невозможно. Глубина Таам Джа до сих пор неизвестна, но она точно глубже всех известных голубых дыр.

Ученые пытались измерить глубину голубой дыры Юкатана при помощи звуковых волн. Обычно, как только волны звука достигают дна, они отражаются — таким образом исследователи изучают морское дно. Но каково же было их удивление, когда при исследовании дыры Таам Джа волны попросту не отразились. По словам ученых, волны были поглощены на глубине примерно 274 метров. То, что находится глубже, для науки является очень большой тайной.
Не исключено, что звуки научного оборудования поглощаются слишком плотной водой на глубине. Резкий скачок плотности воды на большой глубине научным языком называется пикноклином. А бывающие на больших глубинах моряки называют его проще — жидким грунтом. Но доказательств этому на данный момент нет.
