Но, как правило, такие “виды-призраки” скрываются от глаз ученых не очень долго — речь может идти о десятках или, в крайнем случае, нескольких сотнях лет. Но с сосной воллеми было все иначе — она считалась вымершей 2 миллиона лет, пока в 1994 году ее не обнаружила группа туристов в каньоне национального парка Воллеми в Австралии (в 100 км к западу от Сиднея). С тех пор ее стали называть «живым ископаемым», или «деревом динозавров», так как она существовала 145–66 миллионов лет назад. Возможно, в тени этих деревьев когда-то укрывались от палящего солнца динозавры. Оно пережило не только падение метеорита Чиксулуб, вызвавшего массовое вымирание, но и многочисленные изменения климата. Но в чем заключается секрет такой живучести? Недавно ученым удалось ответить на этот вопрос.

В настоящее время осталось не так много сосен воллеми — около 60 деревьев. Тем не менее этот вид показывает исключительную выживаемость. Чтобы пролить свет на эту особенность, группа ученых из Австралии, США и Италии расшифровали его геном. Это помогло выяснить как дерево эволюционировало, какими обладает репродуктивными особенностями и в чем заключается секрет сохранения вида.
Как удалось выяснить, сосна имеет 26 хромосом, которые содержат невероятные 12,2 миллиарда пар оснований. У людей, например, только 3 миллиарда пар оснований. В то же время эти деревья обладают чрезвычайно низким генетическим разнообразием. Это говорит о том, что с момента, когда популяция резко сократилась (26-10 тысяч лет назад), ареал сосны был достаточно узким.

Сосна воллеми не обменивается большим количеством генетического материала. В основном дерево размножается путем “клонирования” себя, то есть пускает поросль. Отростки вырастают из корневой системы и становятся самостоятельными деревьями. Но, судя по всему, они не всегда так размножались.
В ходе исследования ученые обнаружили, что геном сосны содержит большое количество транспозонов, или так называемых ”прыгающих генов”, Они представляют собой части ДНК, которые способны менять свое место в геноме. Перемещаясь по геному, они меняют последовательность букв, в результате чего возникают или исчезают определенные мутации. Скорее всего, именно эта особенность косвенно обеспечила высокую выживаемость вида.

Сосны воллеми размножаются при помощи побегов
В случае с соснами, мутации могли способствовать сокращению численности популяции, связанной с изменением климата и прочими факторами. Оказавшись в стрессовой ситуации, растение перешло на бесполое размножение при помощи поросли. Таким образом удалось уменьшить риск возникновения вредных мутаций, так как сократился обмен генами. Но при этом прыгающие гены обеспечили увеличение генетического разнообразия. Благодаря ему, дерево становилось устойчивым к различным изменяющимся условиям окружающей среды.
Но, интересно, что сосна воллеми восприимчива к болезням. В частности, она подвержена воздействию патогенной водной плесени Phytophthora cinnamomi. Исследование показало, что гены устойчивости к болезни подавляются собственным РНК, которая связана с развитием широкой хвои. Если вы обратите внимание на фото, то заметите, что у этой сосны необычно широкая хвоя. Таким образом эволюция открыла доступ патогенным угрозам.
В дикой природе осталось только 4 сосны воллеми
Таким образом, история эволюции дерева очень запутана и сложна, но все это позволило ему миллионы лет приспосабливаться к различным условиям. Правда, в дикой природе в настоящее время осталось всего четыре сосны. Все остальные экземпляры произрастают в искусственных ботанических садах.
