Термиты-камикадзе — “бегущие химические бомбы”
Термитов-камикадзе (Neocapritermes taracua) из-за взрывчатого поведения еще называют “бегущими химическими бомбами”. О такой их способности ученые узнали сравнительно недавно — только в 2012 году. Как сообщалось в исследовании, опубликованном в журнале Science, рабочие термиты Neocapritermes taracua развивают двухкомпонентный суицидальный аппарат, состоящий из кристаллов медьсодержащего белка.
Химическое вещество содержится во внешних мешочках синего цвета. За его выработку отвечают железы в брюшной полости. Количество защитных веществ, и вместе с тем готовность взорваться, у термитов увеличиваются с возрастом. Когда термитам угрожает опасность, они взрывают себя и врагов, которые находятся поблизости.
При взрыве ферменты в “рюкзаках” смешиваются с относительно безвредными выделениями, вырабатываемыми в их слюнных железах. При смешивании двух компонентов возникает липкая жидкость с крайне токсичными летучими веществами. Эти вещества способны обездвижить или убить хищников. Разумеется, сам термит при этом тоже погибает.

Такое поведение ученые называют аутотизисом, или суицидным альтруизмом. Такое название связано с тем, то насекомое уничтожает себя, чтобы избавиться от врагов, и таким образом защитить других особей в популяции.
Надо сказать, что Neocapritermes taracua являются не единственным видом, который обладает подобными способностями. Суицидальным альтруизмом известны еще вьетнамские термиты вида Globitermes sulphureus, а также Serritermes serrifer, Dentispicotermes и некоторые другие виды. Однако у многих видов, например, таких как Globitermes sulphureus, способностью взрывать себя обладают не все особи, а только каста солдат.
Как термиты используют взрывоопасные “рюкзаки”
Для ученых оставалось загадкой, как фермент BP76, который накапливается в мешочках, остается в твердом состоянии на спинах, но при этом готов к мгновенной реакции в случае опасности. Разгадать эту загадку удалось изучив кристаллическую структуру фермента с высоким разрешением, о чем авторы исследования сообщают в издании Structure.

Трехмерная структура фермента показала, что BP76 использует сразу несколько способов стабилизации. Как поясняют исследователи, прежде всего фермент плотно сложен, подобно листу бумаги, свернутому многократно. Это помогает ему противостоять деградации с течением времени.
Кроме того, существует еще один уровень защиты, который обеспечивает молекула сахара. Она прикрепляется к белку, в результате чего образуется защитное покрытие, которое еще больше стабилизирует фермент. Но самое главное — это очень редкая и необычайно сильная химическая связь между лизином и цистеином, то есть аминокислотами, возле активного центра фермента.
Обычно такая связь в ферментах не встречается, но в данном случае она играет самую важную роль в поддержании структуры BP76. Эта связь служит неким механизмом блокировки, который гарантирует, что фермент не изменит свою форму и будет оставаться функциональным и полностью готовым к использованию в любой момент, когда это понадобится термиту для спасения своей колонии.
